Wow that's a nice 300!
moddog, my Newport has some key benefits for mileage your 300 didn't have. Your 300 had a 3.23 rear end and (if it was stock) a Carter AFB carb. My Newport isn't stock - it's a factory 2-bbl engine, rebuilt with a 204/214 cam, and a Carter Thermoquad carb. It also has a 2.76 rear end. The spreadbore carb makes a huge difference in gas mileage because the primaries are so tiny.
I have used a variety of cheap tires on it, all of them 215/75/14 whitewalls up until last year when I put 15" Cragar wheels on it.
BTW if your car only got 8 mpg something was wrong with it. Or, maybe you had a 440. I don't think I've ever gotten under 11 with mine (except the one tank where I got 6, but I wasn't exactly driving normally for that one).
I also don't think I mentioned that the car gets 12-13 around town, so it only gets decent mileage on the highway. I'm certainly not saying it always gets 23 mpg.
