FWIW; I agree with you about the appearance of the black antenna on the roof; had mine painted back in May (and the windshield washer covers) in body color. Looks grand and has caused NO problems with reception. Left the black mounting pad unpainted (with careful masking; same on the WW covers). Wanted to remove it to paint it (and the WW covers); removal was more trouble than it was worth; it would require removal of the rear part of the headliner..
The painter was very careful and didn't get overspray everywhere -- he basicly masked off most of the roof and rear end (and the hood/windshield area for thw WW units). I have some pics still in the camera. Just as soon as I finish off the roll, they'll be posted.
