Hey fellas,
Ive had my car for about 2 months now and i feel like there is something loose in the front end so im posting this up. Its an 06 SRT8 300C and only has 16,000 miles on it. Its due for brakes which seems normal for the SRT's around the 15,000 mile mark and im about to order the posi quiet pads for it. I need something quiet with good performance that will cut down on the brake dust so i figure thats my answer.
Anyway, back to the front end.... I had the car in at the dealer to check it out under warranty. They replaced the strut tension bars and said it was fixed. Well, ive had the car back now for 2 weeks and that same feel is still there when i hit abrupt bumps in the road. It feel like something maybe tie rod or ball joint related? Anyone else experience this???
Im not sure if im just crazy and being too picky with the car but its been bothering me and im considering taking it to another dealer to get another opinion. Other than this, the car has been great! I forget how fast she is when im just cruising around but when i let her rip... she flys!!! Im loving it!!!! :scared:
My 05 300C has loose rattle from left front, only audible at low speed especially over speed bumps. You'd think it would be sway bar links/rubbers or brake pad separation, but it isn't. Front end is tight ie tie rod ends/ball joints, car runs straight/ no uneven tire wear. A puzzler, I'm still looking!!
Just had mine done. The brake disc has a cover and it rusts around the bolt and comes loose giving a tinny rattle. Needs replacing or a big washer will do it
I believe thats what they replaced on mine. The strut tensioner/stabilizer bars or whatever.
Mine has yet to wear the tires in any odd way and when i take corners, it seems to handle like it should. Its just over abrupt/sudden bumps that you can feel/hear it. The dealer couldnt find it and neither could I. Im sure there is something we must be missing though.... at:
I have a 3.5 with the same noise.Brought the car in last week and my mechnic told me I needed all tire rods replaced and 2 torsion bars also replaced. So i asked him will the noise go away and he said yes.Guess what the noise is back a week later and $500 short in my pocket.Going to bring the car back after the snow ends.Just snowed in NY.I will give a update once I talk to him.I just hope they dont keep telling me to replace parts and the noise is still there.
vinster please post update when you get the car back. let us know what they tell you it seams like everybodys shop says its something else but it looks like nobody figured it out yet where that noise come s from.
What tire pressure do yall run in your tires? Im running 35 indicated on the cluster but when i check it with a manual guage at the stem, its actually around 38-39 PSI. Im running on the SRT 20's if it makes a difference from the 18's the other C's come with...
Ill try lowering it a bit and see what happens. Im planning to take it to another dealer soon though to have it looked at again by some new eyes...
I had a rattle in my front end going over bumps and after a lot of detective work they found some gravel that had gotten trapped in the heat shield next to the left front tire. It might be something simple like that.
Thanks for the suggestion man but im about 100% sure that its something in the front suspension. It doesnt sound like a rattle from gravel. It sounds more like something in the front end has play in it when it shouldnt...
it sounds like everybody got this problem ...i feel like theres no front end suspension..when i hit some bumps in low speed i feel the clunk noise in my steering wheel and gas pedal thats weird dont u think...
and sometimes rattles this is not normal it only has 18'000 miles i bought it with 12'000 last march i hardly drive it ... feels like an old 1970 chevette ...hopefully they will resolve this problem...sometimes i regret buying this car very upset with these problems already....
Mins only has 16,000 on it. Bought it a few months ago with 14,500. I love the car. The nick nack issues are frustrating but im sure someone will figure out what it is sooner or later. Im actually glad to hear its common. It sucks but at least it makes me feel a little better about it... lol
This used to be all over the forums a year or so ago. This will only help SRT 3Hundy though, for the rest of you, especially if you have aftermarket wheels it could be a lot of stuff but a lot of suspension problems have been found on base and C models with lots of tie-rod problems.
For SRTs, there was a SRT engineers chat session a year or so ago where they took in someone's car for a few weeks to figure it out and said the front end clunk was coming from the rebound dampers in the bilstein struts, and they said it was part of the design of the strut and that it was normal unfortuantely. Funny thing is, not all of the struts do it, so if you replaced them with another set it will probably go away. I've never had the noise, but people used to complain about it all the time.
The SRT engineer chat sessions are archived so you could dig for it - I can't remember which one it was in. Maybe someone else can help. Good luck,

Theoretically, the noise can be eliminated by removing the check valve from the damper. Unfortunately, independent tuning of jounce and rebound for good ride with control in limit handling maneuvers is difficult to accomplish without a check valve. We at SRT think this is not worth the performance sacrifice.
Anyone having difficulty in locating and fixing suspension noises should consider paying $200 for Chassis Ears on Ebay, especially if you no longer have a factory or extended warranty. The SRT8 engineers also use Chassis Ears.
I am very glad I purchased Chassis ears and think they are a great investment.
ok came back from the dealer today they found the tie rods are bad and the streering rack is no good either.....so they said there going ti change the tie rods today..but they cant change the steering rack because its back ordered about 2 weeks is that possible how many 300 are they having problems with...
so i got as loaner today now they want it back tommorrow...is it possible that the car will get worse in 2 weeks with this steering rack problem.....bye the way they told me that the throttle body is dirty they want to clean out the system for $210.00......is it worth it or they want to make money on me for this service they are doing..... thanks what do u think ......
Changed all my tire rods last week and still have the noise. They also told me my steering rack was okay so dont know whats going on now because this noise is killing me.Like i said going to bring it back to the shop soon to see if they missed anything under there.
Thanks for the help Eric!!! Maybe i can get the struts replaced under warranty? If not, i can just wait until i lower the car and change to struts myself to see how it turns out afterward.
Vinster: Sucks to hear about your front end man but at least it will be fixed. As for the TB, it really depends how dirty it is and how far they are planning to go as far as cleaning it out... When i worked at the local Dodge Dealership when i was in high school as a porter a few years back, i would see the techs use brake cleaner and a rag to clean the throttle bodies only as far as the hand could reach. If thats what they plan to do, i would just do it yourself in the 5-10 mins it would take and save the $$$.
Note that these cars are famous for front end problems, so an experienced eye and ear is critical. You don't always get the "good guys" at the dealership/stealership so get a second opinion.
And not all SRT8's exhibit this problem. Mine is tight as ... well let's just say really tight at over 30k miles.
See this post. http://www.300cforums.com/forums/sr.../67038-rattling-noise-moved-2.html#post798424
I have recently started to "promote" the benefits of Chassis Ears. Considering our suspension/steering components are prone to problems, and many dealers will charge over $100 just to put our cars on the rack and inspect our suspension, $200 for the Chassis Ears is good investment.
ok came back from the dealer today with my car and the invoice tells me they change the front left upper tie rod and the steering rack is on back order for 2 weeks.....so my question is why would they only change one side but not the other tie rod ...can they do that i thought if one goes bad u should change both of them.....anybody have any answers...would'nt that be any commonsence to change both....... bye the way the clunk noise is still there....pissed off...
Yep, common sense says to change both tie rods if one is obviously bad. Tie rods are relatively cheap and easy to replace. So they should have done both.
Since you still have the clunk, then you gotta hope it is the steering rack's inner tie rods. Is this all covered under your warranty?
im going to ask them when i bring it back in 2 weeks...all my dealers around me closed so i have to drive an hour to the dealer where i bought the car..
Cassis ears look like a good tool. Ill consider picking some up.
Im going to take my car to another shop when i get a chance and hopefully i can get a good second opinion. Id just like to know what it is causing the loose sound. I know with just 16,000 miles, it cant be anything major. Im hoping its just the struts like Eric said...
