That's my point. 300HP additional by changing fuel isn't small potatos. People I know don't run race gas as much. I know 2 people with high boost turbos and 99% of the time I'll take them in any race because they run pump gas. I guess that's the difference between a VERY expesive 1000HP purpose built Supra always running race gas and a daily driven Eclipse GSX. Personally I'd rather have a bigger cube motor on pump gas running 700HP. That's just my preference. A 1000HP Supra is hardly cheap to do comparitively to a small block V8 on 15psi. If money is no object you can make anything fast. It has to do with your budget. That was my only point.

That's a rule of thumb for ANY fast car, not just Supras.

True but not so much for cars running extreme amounts of boost. Not every home garage gear head can handle the talent it takes to tune a 500HP boosted I4 compared to a 500HP N/A 396 V8 let's say. Again, I'm only making comparisons to personal taste, income, and ability. I'm not saying one is "better" than the other. Whatever floats your boat.

You are correct. 8-second ET's have been laid down using stock cast pistons and the stock crankshaft. The stock IRS suspension is also stout. 7.90ETs have been run on the stock rear halfshafts and diff.
|
When you say stock you have to be careful here. That's quite a blanket statement. There's nothing stock about a car running 7.90's. Even in the so called "stock" suspension. Let's not get into trasmissions either. There's plenty of grenaded Supra tranny's out there.

on the other hand my ZF 6-speed has been proven to be good for extreme applications. I'm not bragging about my transmission, but there are weak links in different places in different cars.....BTW: my D44, stock spindles, driveshaft, and half shafts have proven reliable in 9 second cars too. I guess it just depends. The D36 rears in the auto 'vettes explode with even minor traction. Weak links in different applications.

Cobras are nice, and respond well to mods. Too bad the factory rearends are so weak. 600rwhp will destroy it. Unfortunately, it seems like every kid has a Cobra, and the blower whine also gets reeeeally annoying after a while. I used to own a 10-second Vortech-supercharged Formula Firebird, and even the S-trim made too much noise for me, although it was at idle.
|
I can never get sick of the whine. I still love mine. Yes I agree though, the rear ends in the Cobras suck and between that and lackluster looks, it has kept me away. I'd rather have a solid axle anyway for a track driven car. That goes without saying.

That's a given!

That's why I'm waiting for the '07 Shelby. Now THAT is a big difference in looks and my personal taste between the two. I don't think Mustangs have looked good since '67 through '05. Imagine what getting rid of that power robbing roots on a 5.4 and swapping with a turbo will do.

It's not really fair anyway to compare a 4.6 with $1,500 of bolts ons making 600RWHP on pump gas to a 700CHP Supra. There is quite a price difference.
Bottom line, you gotta pay to play. My little cousin said he was going to build a turbo I4 to beat my V8......I put $6k into my V8 producing modest HP on 91 octane...he put $15k into his I4 running 104 octane.....He still hasn't beaten me.

.... close, but not yet.
I will say this....If you know where I can pick up a Supra in excellent condition in stock form with less than $150,000,000 miles on the odo for under $25k, then I'm there. Otherwise I'll stick to something more reasonable. I love Supras but it just seems to me that their low production numbers and the fact that every speed freak wants one has made the prices too high for what you get. It's too bad. Like I said, I would love to own one.
