I need some help... I have had my 2012 300 limited for almost a month now (bought used), there seems to be some strange things going on:
Can't tell what speaker setup it has (when I look up my model, it says it should only have 6 speakers but it looks/sounds like it has a sub) anyway to tell?
makes a whining noise when turning past a certain point...took to dealer but they say they can't hear anything.
Other than that I love the car and can't wait to make some mods. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, I looked in the back but everything is covered. I see what looks like a dip down in the middle of the dash and I guess that could be sub, but I do not have any extra settings in the stereo. This was a rental, so I'm thinking they got some kind of franken-package.
I am not turning to the lock position. I an even "feel" it in the steering wheel when I turn.
I believe there are four different systems for this car. There are base and premium six speaker systems, neither of which has a sub. The other two are the 10 speaker Beats system, and the 19 speaker Harmon Kardon system. If you don't have speakers in the rear doors, then you have one of the six speakers systems without a sub. Also, the Beats system is clearly marked, so if you have it you'd know it. Not sure about the HK system. If you have the premium Alpine 6 speaker system, it will say Alpine on the door pillars near the front windshield. My car has the 6 speaker Alpine system, and I added an 8" sub to the rear deck. The mounting hole is already there, although it is an odd 4 bolt pattern, and the Alpine SWR823D sub I purchased would not bolt in, so I had to make and adapter and under mount it. I also added a sub amplifier to power the it, since the stock amp has no provision to do so.
One final point, the mounded panel that fits under the deck and covers the rear speakers has a depression for clearance for a sub on the rear deck, even though the sub is not there. Perhaps this is what you are seeing and are thinking you have a sub? Since you bought the car used, it is certainly possible that the previous owner added a sub, just as I did. If you don't see an enclosure in the trunk area, then you will need to remove the cover over the rear speakers and look there. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. It does have the alpine badges. I will have to figure out how to take that cover off to check it tomorrow. Do you hear a noticeable difference with the sub? If it's not there I would like to add one, I feel like the system is missing low-end sound.
The whining from the steering wheel. I got it too. You can hear it and feel it more in parking lots. sometimes louder than other times. I think it sounds like rubber on rubber scratching. Dealer could not duplicate the problem.
OK, you have the Alpine "premium" six speaker system, which is the same as my car. I noticed in one of your posts that your car was previously a rental, so I'm very sure that you don't have a sub.
The cover is easy to take off. Just remove the large push pins. If I remember correctly, there are three in the front, behind the back seat; one near the middle and two or three in the back by the rear deck. The small push pins in the back are attached to magnets so they don't need to be removed as the magnets just pull away from the body. Once you get it off, you'll see the hole where the sub goes between the two 6x9" full range speakers. In my car, it was sealed over with silver metallic tape. In my case, the wiring harness was even there for the sub, but not connected to the factory amp because it is not able to power a sub.
Yes, I noticed a considerable improvement in bass after installing the sub and amp. Like you, I wasn't happy with the amount of bass my system produced, which is why I added the sub. Understand that an 8" sub mounted in the rear deck will not give you window rattling bass, like a 12" in an enclosure, with a strong amp will; but it is definitely an improvement, and easily noticeable compared to the stock setup. I'm pretty happy with mine now. If you decide to add an 8" sub to the package tray, make sure to get a speaker rated for free air. Otherwise you'll have problems with the speaker "rattling" when you turn up the volume. Most sub speakers are designed to run in an enclosure under pressure, not out in the open. That's why I chose the Alpine SWR823D for my car, it is free air rated. Of course you could get the factory sub from Chrysler as well, but I think you'd pay a lot more for it and it probably isn't as good a speaker. There are probably other speakers that will work as well.
As far as the amp goes, you'll need one that is capable of "high level inputs". This will allow you to tap into the wires to the rear speakers to provide a signal for the amp. If you want to control the sub volume independently, you'll need a amp which has it's own volume control.
