2013 Phantom Black Tri-Coat thoughts? (w/pics)

I took a quick 50 mile drive up to a not-so-local local Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealer to take a peek at this new paint color.

I am considering putting in an order for John Varvatos Limited Edition and an option with this car (and I believe any 2013 300) is the Phantom Black Tri-Coat Pearl paint. It's a black pearl paint with a metallic shimmer.

I have looked at a number of Black Pearl/metallic paint jobs (diamond black on Cadillac, tuxedo black on Fords) and was quite curious to see what Chryslers take on the color might be. Mostly because I am not comfortable ordering a car without ever seeing the paint color so it was worth the trip.

I'm glad I took the trip....

Overall I am a little disappointed. I haven't made an ultimate decision but definitely have a lot to think about.

It's a little too "blingy" for me but I could see someone liking it. The undertones are a blue/purple. I was hoping for something a little more subtle – perhaps with undertones of dark gray and silver. I actually walked past a Dodge that had a more subtle (and classy IMHO) dark grey paint job that I preferred much more to the one on the Chrysler 300. However – the blue and purple are not quite as strong as the pictures make it out to be - from 10 feet away there is a subtle shimmer but when you get closer (and I can only speak to seeing it in the bright sunlight) it definitely starts to look very "magical and glittery".

Does anyone else have experience seeing this color in person? I would be curious to get other peoples opinions.

I also did not get a chance to see it at night and the salesman at the dealership said it looks quite cool at night. Anyone seen it at night?

(Sorry about the cell phone pics and the glare. The car was also literally just washed off so some funkiness might be water droplets)

2013 Phantom Black Tri-Coat thoughts? (w/pics)

FYI – found better pic online of the same phantom black on the body panel of a Charger and then another of it on a 300S.

Thoughts anyone..? About this color or just opinions on pearl paints in general..?

Anyone know if pearl painted cars are trickier to touch up scratches and/or repair..? More susceptible to swirl marks? Scuffs?

(btw - I did not do that writing on the pic of the 300S)

I've seen it in person. It's similar to brilliant black which was done on the first gens. Personally, I hate the color, but I'm not a fan of metallic paints. I much prefer a deep gloss black personally.

2013 Phantom Black Tri-Coat thoughts? (w/pics)

Thanks for your thoughts. Nice to "get a second opinion" from other folks into 300s.

My current car is a high gloss black -- which I love -- but was thinking I might want to do something a little different.. I was definitely hoping to be more impressed with the Phantom Black TriCoat which would allow me to be more confident with putting in an order for the John Varvatos Limited Edition... I'm still gonna "sleep on it" for a bit but the 300S option is looking like more of a possibility,. I just wish the interiors of the 300S were a little more posh rather than sporty.

I was hoping the JV Limited would get me a mean exterior with an upgraded interior but the exterior is definitely less mean when it sparkles.. Still curious to see how the interior looks.. If I dig it I may just have to suffer through not loving the exterior paint..

I'll know more in a few weeks when I will be seeing a JV Limited in person...

I mostly agree with smoove.

I do however like metallic paints on sports cars, (usually smaller in scale) but not so much on a larger, more classy car!

Yes, it is part of the, (rather expensive @ $2,850) Luxury Package.

One thing I learned however, is that the leather seats are specific to the "S", and are not perforated, which will not allow the cooled seat option.

There are several features missing from a fully loaded Sport then say a Luxury model, both fully loaded.

I thought mine was going to have the power side view mirrors, but it does not.

Having said that, the leather seats in the S model are nice.

Does your 300S have the Luxury Package? From my reading, the power side view mirrors are part of the Luxury Package. From the description of the Luxury Package on Chrysler's website, it does not seem to come with the "leather interior group". The 300 SRT8's leather interior group option is $2,500 by itself....

Guess you might be right.

These are the seats that come with the S:

SEATING
Leather Trim Seats
Leather-Trimmed Bucket Seats
Power Front Driver and Passenger Seats
Driver / Passenger Power 4-Way Lumbar Adjust
Heated Front Seats
Rear 60 / 40 Folding Seat

And the Luxury Group has:

Auto Adjust-In-Reverse Exterior Mirrors
Driver's Auto-Dimming Exterior Mirror
Door Sill Scuff Pads
Driver And Passenger Lower LED Lamps
Front And Rear LED Map Pockets
Heated / Cooled Front Console Cup Holder
Heated Second-Row Seats
Heated Steering Wheel
Power Adjustable Pedals With Memory
Rear Power Sunshade

So, only leather trimmed seats are available, (and standard) in the S!

I got the Driver's Auto-Dimming Exterior Mirror on my S, think it came with the light group, or maybe safety tech. Still curious why its not both mirrors......
