Has anyone tried to bake apart the Headlights/Taillights yet? I may have this done soon and just wondering if anyone else had done it yet or tried for these newer type of lights. Either way, I'd like to get them black interior, instead of the stock chrome. Anyone?
(Srry if this has already been discussed, I couldn't find anything like it other than actually purchasing JV heads and tails, but we all know... for a mod on budget, JV/SRT lights are way expensive.)
There is a guy on cherokeesrt8.com that does this. He is very good. He has tones of threads on it and he did a set for my 06 srt8gc. Only problem is you have to ship him your lights. He does switch backs, halo's, projector retro fit's, and painted rear housings. Hope this helps.
yeah. but I was wondering if these newer generation 300's would be subject to it.. wasn't sure if the newer style head/tails were something not to mess with in this manner. But that's also another thing, I've already talked with oracle lighting about doing the same thing. Getting a color shift setup with my lights, they said I'd have to ship them in to them as well... and then they'd paint them and install the LEDs and whatnot.. but then i'd be out of transportation for ... weeks? Not something I could do. I've also talked to a local place and they said they'd have their guy look at it when I bring it in to black out my chrome accents. But thats 2 weeks away. Just looking into information for it. Not really looking to spend the 500 bucks for headlights and whatnot if they can't bake them apart and seal up again.
But my plan is to at least try this with the Taillights, Black out the chrome. The headlights may have to wait till I can get the color shift kit in and do it all together at one time. All in all, if they can do the taillights and whatnot i'll get some pictures in. Wouldn't be too different from varvatos tails, just price haha. I guess its all plausible if I could find the weather seal stripping used around the light fixture, then you could pretty much do anything you wanted, with a guaranteed new seal on afterwards
Which I guess pretty much solves my own question? ... anyway, does anyone know what kind of weather seal stuff is used on them? I'd might as well check it out and get some anyway
Have you looked around for used headlights from a 300S? Must be some wrecked by now. As for the rears, the outer chrome/silver edge looks like it's part of the seal. Not sure how you could ever make that right again if you separated it. Why don't you try Lamin-X. I think it's about $50 total for both rear lenses.
Yeah I could always look for wrecked 300's for headlights/taillights, but if anyone in their right mind would know that's selling them, they'd still be expensive. But its always worth a look around to check.
As for the film/tint, thats illegal in my state/area to have those covers/tints. Although I think it should be fine if you have the LED taillights, they're pretty bright and still work... lol - anyways, but I figured I could just make the chrome a black, and kind of make it the same accented way..
That's not what I'm trying to get at here though.. I'm trying to find the best way to properly change my chrome accent of the taillight, to a black accent. Without buying a whole new set of JV Taillights for hundreds of dollars... Not really looking to do a tint/cover..
For sure the front headlights have been baked and taken apart and put hid projectors in, there is a there on here detailing how to do it, so the fronts do come apart. I will be doing it to my S as I am changing mine to chrome and silver with the projector mod as I have a white S and with the chrome grille I have coming dont like the dark lights.
Ok, so I may be wrong, but the headlights in all the second generation 300s are projector headlights. Halogen or HID, both projector headlights. The halogens can be converted to HIDs with a kit. No need to bake open the lamps. Here's a thought, why don't you trade your headlights with Crankz1. Yours are dark, his are silver and chrome. Sounds like the perfect swap. Then all you have to do is install an HID kit and you're done.
PM each other. Not a sales/trade thread. Just a MOD thread for head/tails.
And yeah, I just ordered some colorshift 2.0 LEDs and halo for my headlights. So once those come in, I'm gonna make it black housing and get all that done in 1 setup. As for the taillights... I haven't had time to take a look at them closer yet.. But soon enough I'll figured out what I can do with the taillights in any way that doesn't ruin any part of it at all. Hopefully worst case scenario would just to take them apart, do the blacking, and then RE-seal the weather sealant on it, and be done. That'd be awesome. haha
The headlights on the gen II 300 are easy to pull apart once you've put them in the oven for a few minutes. Much easier to work with gen II headlights for halo installs than gen I headlights.
The tail lights on gen II are not easy pull apart. The tails are plastic welded from the factory the only way to get the lens off the tails is to cut the lens off from the rest of the tail.
Now that I have a set of JV tails on my 3S I can play with the factory set of tails that came on my car for a unique lighting project.
After cutting the clear lens off it is easy to take the rest of the tails apart.
I plan to paint the entire inside red lens in body color white and use these red led concept strips from oracle wired in as my new parking lights, brake lights, turn signal and hazard lights. The factory led will no longer work and the concept strips will take there place. I will use a waterproof silicone to seal up the tails when I'm finished.
Nice. That is awesome information and pictures. You sir, are awesome. One question, do you have a detailed picture/explanation for like where and how you had cut your lens off from the rest of the tail ? Is that clear lens plastic welded on to that gray part? Still haven't had time to check them out yet on my car, but your pictures are awesome, thanks! You'll have to post some pictures of your LED strip mod when you're finished! What do you plan to do with them once you have finished though? (Since you'll already have JV tails and your stock tails)
Not trying to hijack but does anyone have contact info for any members who do halo installs etc? I'd be willing to ship as long as the pricing is reasonable. I know shops around here want a gold bar and your soul to do halo installs. Mine is a gen 1 that I'd like to have it done on. I've read all about doing it on my own but I'm scared to do it. I have factory xenons so I definitely don't want to f up the housings etc.
Again I'm not trying to hijack. I'll delete it us you want me to.
I've taken a number of second generation headlights apart. They mainly have 3 different designs. The Oracle Halos will not fit on HID lights or 2013 300S lights. What I did was make the projector glow to composite. Here is my car with the Oracle PCB installed
I wonder why you couldn't get the oracle halo to fit on the gen II headlight (HID or dual halogen) I have seen the oracle Houston shop install halos on a dozen gen II headlights.
RGB? I just ordered the color shift 2.0 with the LEDs so I should be good. Once they get here I'll have a shop mess with the lights so I don't break anything lol
Yes. I purchased the Color Shift 2.0 kit comes with the RGB Halos, RGB PCB Boards, and Controller.
One thing to note. Once you install the PCB Board you will lose factory DRL Functionality. You actually take off the existing factory LED's and put in the new PCB board. You can manually set the Controller to white when you are driving but they will not work as from factory
So will they be wired up on something completely different away from the car itself? As in I wouldn't be able to have them wired into the power for "parking lights" so when I turn the switch one over that usually turned the "DRL" that they wouldn't turn on with the power ? Then I'd just control color remotely from there ?
The stock headlights have a a small circuit board on the inside. One of the connectors go to the stock LED's. One wire is ground and the other is power. The stock PCB board consists of 16 white only LED's. Since you are taking those out totally your day time running lights will no longer work.
In place of the stock LED's you will be installing a new PCB board with 16 RGB LED's. There are four wires going to this board. One mutual power and a ground for each color. If you want white you need simply ground all the three colors.
You don't have a way to to wire these up to the existing DRL system unless you build some kind of relay system. All functionality of the LED's now are controlled by the RGB controller. If you wanted to have them on you could always turn the controller on every time you drive. And off course turn them to white.
I understand what you're saying about the Daytime Running Lights, But my question was they could that whole new Colorshift 2.0 setup be powered by turing my switch to "parking lights" and would they come on then, in which case, i'd use the controller to turn the color to white right? I have my DRL option turned off in the infotainment center, because I always flip my lights switch one over to "parking lights" and they come on anyway. You get what im trying to get at? Smelling what im stepping in?
Was seeing if they could be powered simply by the parking light on switch, so i flip it over, and they're on...?
Got it. I guess you could do that as long as you tap into the parking lights wire. I don't see why not.
I wonder if the car turns the parking lights off after parked for a while? Lets say you park at a show and your car is off. You turn on the parking lights. Will the car kill the power after a while?
hmm. maybe. But I also have (3) Kinetik Audio HC2000 Batteries I could install somewhere for power, haha.. Old stuff I have leftover from the previous 2006 Chrysler 300 Touring build I had. haha
I just tried the Lamin-x last night. I got the lightest tint they had. I thinks its a perfect shade. I think Adam's pics above are that shade.
Unfortuantley the learning curve on applying the material got me and I butchered one of the films. Hoping I can get a replacment. One point of note about the install. Get a big spray bottled and fill it with filtered water. It will be your friend. The more water you use, the easier the install. The kit comes with a very tiny bottle but you end up filling it a bunch of times.
