Lake Effect in NE Ohio
|
First real snow fall of the season. Left the house plenty early before the
snow machine turned on. Currently running F1's but have Blizzak DM-Z3
snows on Borbet Type TS Bright Silver wheels sitting in by office garage.
Before an early afternoon meeting I decide to put on the snows since we
already had 4" on the ground and the snow was coming down quite hard.
Got right rear on quickly, proceeded to the front right. Un-bolted the wheel
but could not pull the wheel off the hub without pulling the car off the floor
jack. Great..... proceeded to the left rear and changed that quickly thinking
at least I would have the rears on.. When to my meeting with mis-matched
tires F1's on the front and Blizzak's on the rear. Was surprised to see the
F1's able to steer so well in the road snow and mixed slush. Stopped at the
closest Big Box and picked up some Liquid Wrench and spray grease. Pulled
car in office garage and hit both front wheels at the hub. After clearing the
parking lot and walks, proceeded to change the fronts. Easy work with the
wheel pulling right off this time.
Couple of observations. First off I learned to drive in my home town of
Buffalo NY. Big rear wheel drive cars with bias-belted tires. Need I say
any more. Last car was a 5 series sport, so I ran winter tires on that car too.
The Blizzaks are taller than the F1's. Good thing to have in the winter since
the front clearance is so low. Nice feel driving home on the snow covered
hilly roads. The softer tires absorb the road imperfections, and there are
plenty of them in NE Ohio. Braking was quite good, in fact felt better than
when the F1's were on. I may have to experience a bit more seat time
before I stand behind that statement.
Hey Mr Happy: Have you bought your snows yet? You can see what a
Black SRT8 looks like and drives like on the Blizzak's and Borbets. Email me.
PS The blizzak's are directional so watch what you are doing when you start
to mount the tires. Also the Borbets need a tool to remove the lug nut
cover and I paniced at the first wheel and opened all the wrapped wheels
from Tire Rack and of course the last wheel/tire combo had the magic
card board box taped inside with the tool and new lugs. Also, you can
NOT install the lug nuts on the Borbets with a typical 'X' tire iron. The
sockets on the 'X' lug wrench are too wide (thick) and do not fit in the
narrow cast of the wheel to reach the lug nut. You will have to use a
typical socket and torque wrench to install the nuts.
