The previous poster is in error. In my GMC 4L80E you can raise the line pressure anywhere you want and no shifting occurs until the proper solenoid is energized by the pcm. More pressure will reduce the duration of the shift but the point at which the shift occurs is all decided electrically, not hydraulically.
This trans is the most sophisticated I have yet seen. It uses 3 different stages of lockup, and this has allowed the apparent stall speed to even be altered by programming!!! Not your typical gearbox!
