I had the same thing happen after I took a tire in for a repair. Pressure showed 0 psi for a couple of minutes and then came back. There is a transponder in the fender well that monitors the pressure sensor. When you hit the piece of scrap, it might have hit the area around the transponder and temporarily affected it.
