True. Some members, almost 2 years ago, were even using the 39mm festoon bulbs. But found that even re-squeezing the socket prongs and inserting the smaller festoons. It did not make as snug/tight a fit than by going with the 44mm festoons.
If you also measure, from loop end to loop end, the oem map light bulbs. They are 1.75" = 44mm.
