0W40 had low levels of Zinc and Phosphorous to start with, even under the SL classification. They appear to have gone down another 10-15% under the SM classification.
Again - just like running a 200 thermostat instead of 180, or reformulating carnuaba waxes based on VOC content, or changing from freon to whatever we use now, the changes are for emissions purposes.
Even Mobil 1's own answer seems to imply that 5W40 turbo diesel oil is a pretty good choice for performance cars.......

JMatt, you kick ass on good info. I was just reading about this on a dyno page and was going to switch, but I still felt uncomfortable regarding the SRT's. Now I'm switching for sure.
