At the limit of handling, the use of a staggered tire set-up also tends to reduce oversteer. This makes the manufacturer's lawyers happier.

It's common for folks who take a street car to the track for road racing or open track days to change from a staggered tire set-up to a uniform setup in order to reduce understeer. For example, many BMW M3 and M5 owners will run at the track with two sets of rear wheels, installed in back and in front.
