I believe the high beams are Halogen, but I could be wrong. I will check on our Heritage Edition later tonight. You may be able to tell by how the back of the bulb position looks in the lamp assembly. IF it is covered by a rubber moisture seal, then it's HID. If you see a right-angle plug with the wiring visible, then it is Halogen. Also your owner's manual should give you some indication of whether any high beams are HID or not.
With respect to brightness and distance illuminated... IF you already have HIDs then you probably will not see any further down the road, only the color will be effected until you get above 8000K (IIRC). If you have halogen's currently then the replacement with HIDs will result in significant improvement in brightness and distance illuminated.
