Having read the manual again on this topic, it is clear that the EVIC will only warn of "significant" under-inflation, which presumably is not 31psi. So tomorrow its an exercise session with the footpump. Maybe my mpg will increase and my waistline decrease! I've just returned 37mpg over a 500 mile round trip to the Northwest, which isn't bad, but still short of your 40 mpg.

it certainly won't increase your fuel consumption, plus you should find that ride improves enormously.
