If there was "barely any tranny fluid" in it, you would have had to have it towed there. More than a quart or 2 low and the car isn't going anywhere. An automatic transmission not only uses the fluid to lubricate but also for hydraulic pressure. No fluid = No hydraulic pressure (clutches can't engage) = Car won't move.

Now if you did have the leak you would have seen a puddle on the ground, so i doubt that was it. What "issue" did you have? and How many miles does your car have on it. I believe the manual recommends servicing the transmission at 30,000 miles? So it may have been due for service but it's highly unlikely that a service alone would cure any transmission problem.
