But that said, no matter where you put a strong magnet in the oil it will collect ferrous metals. It could be anywhere, just so it can be in or directly adjacent to the oil. This doesn't necessarily mean you are removing anything that correct filtration does not, only that your magnet is strong and able to hold onto some particles as they pass by.
Otherwise, they're all in the filter. I think you could make a case for having one in the pan, as you might then protect the oil pump from damage/wear from the particles. But either way it's cool to see them in tangible form.
