I tried the film on the taillights but gave up...due to the shape of the taillight, I could not get them to stay flat with no creases. I ended up spraying them and they still look perfect 5 years later.
I used a clear film on the front to prevent them from getting pitted/yellow, and they were quite easy to do as the lens is pretty much flat. The front takes all the abuse, so if the film eventually looks bad, I will just peel it off and apply a new film.
Based on my experience, I recommend spray on the rear and film on the front.
