What lower side panel? I was thinking you meant the door mouldings, but in your pic, they're gone.

There is a panel located between the front and rear tires. I`ve heard how some people have lost them.

I believe there are some very flimsy clips located underneath the rocker panel that can be simply removed....or just bump into a curb.

This is from the Service Manual, without the picture.
CLADDING-BODY SIDE
REMOVAL
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheels from the side of the vehicle being serviced.
3. Remove the pop rivets from the front fender and rear quarter panel.
4. Remove the rear body side cladding by disengaging the cladding retaining clips from the rocker panel.
5. Remove the front body side cladding by disengaging the retaining clip from the front fender.

The clips on the rocker panel is different from those of the door panel. The tool will not fit inside the slot. I don`t want to start breaking those clips off.
