8-Speed Transmission!

Is anyone else as excited as I am? Also im thinking about swapping mine when I can get my hands on one. Anyone have an idea on how much work that would be. Im an accessory guy not really a mechanical dude.

how will the computer cope if its only expecting to operate a 5 speed? Can you interface the TCM from the 8 speed car into the bus of a 5 speed? I cant see it working without ripping all the electronics out too (sadly!). A manual stick shift I can envisage, (If theres one out there that fits - a MB item?)

Here's a little on the new ZF transmission - ZF Friedrichshafen AG | Press Release.

Initially they'll be coming from Germany until the Indiana plant is up and running just like the current 5 speed was. If you poke around that site you'll see several other manifacturers use this tranny.

You would need a TCM. Better option is using the Mercedes 7 speed which is a direct bolt up to our cars.

now I'm confused....I can see you can get a physical fit, but without a new TCM, how does the system know it has 2 extra gears it needs to operate? Also the shift points built-in will be wrong for the new ratios. I could see it working if either 1) you obtain & can persuade the SLR TCM to fit / interface with existing systems, or 2) you can rewrite the existing TCM to expect/cope with 7 speeds.

If you dont do anything to adapt the electronics, wont the TCM just shift the first 5 gears & ignore the last two? If so, it'll be revving the nuts off fifth at highway speeds!

I'm interested to know - I'm applying logic here without any insiteful knowledge to back it up, so please feel free to point out where I'm wrong

on a stupider note, your gear indicator lights wont show the extra cogs

You take the SLR TCM and swap in some basic computer knowledge to modify it. Moe and I have been talking about this, and it wouldn't take overly much to do it. As for the gear visuals, simple electronic mods will allow for the dash change, and a physical swap of the shifter will allow for all 7 gears to show.

I guess the common MB ancestry must help, but I'm not sure the reprogramming will be as simple as you hope. Very interesting if it can be done though.........can you fix it to cope with an SRT10 & get the whole caboodle to fit my chassis?? .....phone me!

Considering how many years it took the aftermarket to crack the PCM code on the Hemi's I doubt it's "easy".... It may be easy for someone with a background in automotive PCM/TCM programming but for the average computer guy, I'm gonna say negative on that...
