I have been thinking about my next caravan tour. Just did 20000kls towing a 2o ft duel axle, Tare weight 1980 but I reckon about 2500Kgs weight. loaded. Did it in a series 2 Discovery V8 on duel fuel. ( about 26litres/100 ks on petrol and about 30 on gas.) gas in many places was so expensive I ran on petrol.
So I have been thinking about my 300C CRD as a tow car. I know its not rated for this weight but what if I beefed up the rear end with air bags, installed electric brake controller, checked out if there is a stronger mounting for the tow bar.I would appreciate your comments ,. I am planning to buy a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland for our next trip to Broome but was planning a 2013 winter escape from Melbourne to North Qld which may have to be with the Disco again.

Hi Bigmac,
Depends what year your CRD is? It may already have self leveling shockers. Mine is a 2006 model and I am sure it has them. They are huge in diameter. With the Hayman Reese hitch (level rides) it sits perfectly level. I use the standard towbar without any dramas at all. I would simply use HR level rides on your CRD and give it a go. Yes you certainly will need an electric controller. Make sure you get a good one. Mine is a Prodigy P2. I too would love a 2014 Grand Cherokee. It is not out of the question either. I have had several tow vehicles ranging from 4x4's to 5Ltr Statesman, and the 300C is by far the very best. No hill is too steep. Only problem is, is going off road. However, I had no dramas at all going through the Flinders Ranges https://sites.google.com/site/outofy...inders-rangers
Great photos , thanks for the link kelvin. They are good towing cars, 11 Lts/100 is impressive

Thanks Truckz, yes the economy was excellent. However, I rarely got over 80 klm this trip, I had no idea Tassie was so hilly and not a straight road to be seen.
