Radar Detectors in Australia

I know there are threads for this in the general forum, but they're mostly americans and i'm wondering about these products specifically for australian driving, thus i thought i'd post in here.

Firstly, are they at all legal in australia? I don't think they are, hope i'm wrong.

Secondly, do coppers have any way of detected whether you have a detector or not? Some time ago someone told me that cops reverse the detecter in the cop car, and then the detector becomes a detector detector. hope that makes sense. Basically by the slight modification the cops can then detect who has detectors in their car. Is this right? Does anyone know anything about this?

Thirdly, how effective are they? Eg would it beep driving down alexander parade (melbourne folks) coming to that intersection with the duel speed/red light cameras? west gate bridge?

Any feedback appreciated.

Domenic, Radar Detectors are illegal in Australia, except for WA apparently. Take a look at this web site for local options:
http://www.radars.com.au/
This actually came up in your thread on this forum as I assume there is a 300Cforums feature which matches subject and countries to postings.

Yes, the Police can detect Detectors, whether they are switched on or off.

Hi Domenic....from first hand experience, I can tell you that they are illegal (possession of an illegal device was the charge if I remember rightly) and they can detect the "un-detectable" detectors using their detector detectors! The kindly officer just pulled me over near Stawell on my way from Adelaide to Melbourne and asked me to bring the detector and equipment to his car. He then showed me the gizmo which he used to "detect" mine and it was exactly the same as mine, only a crystal was changed to alter it's function. I had bought it while living in Adelaide where the radars were unashamedly used for massive revenue raising. Worked very well though and I liked all the neat LEDs on it!

yeh when i was in the uk about 6 months ago i picked one up for 80 pounds, and it has all the features and its says that its not able to be dectected by police, but i havnt gotten around to installing it yet so i cant really say, there is a legal version on the market in australia called the "road angel" but it just users gprs to show you were the perm speed detector cameras are and where black spots are, for about $600 but not really worth it, if i ever get round to installing mine i'll let you know

Invisible radar detector

Beltronics' new STi Driver has proven invisible in all testing to date. Here's one quote:

"The STi Driver was completely invisible to all radar detector detectors while maintaining a high, blistering sensitivity to all radar bands."
