I dont trust dealers, unless they give it to me in writing

I had an Nissan 350z which i had off the road for six months caught in a legal dispute due to a oil related problem which nissan australia didn't want to fix, now i am extremely wary.....

If the Austrailian version has MDS I'd use 5w20 especially if that's what the oil cap says. Are you sure you are looking at the manually right? Because the owner's manual for my car is for the "300 series" and includes the 2.7, 3.5, and 5.7 engines; make sure you are looking at the specs for the 5.7 in the book.

Brighton Chrysler has done my first oil change. I asked them what grade oil they were going to use and the response, after going into the workshop and checking was, Mobil 1 10w-40. I was not happy and discussed this at length with them. Their response was that Mobil and Chrysler had "approved' that grade for the 5.7.

I rolled over and accepted the "wrong" grade as I have the cost covered as part of my deal and 8 litres of Mobil 1 runs to about $120.

I would strong recommend that all owners buy their own oil to the 5w-20 specification and supply that to the dealer when getting their oil changed.

Kevin ive checked the book and it states 5w-30 for the 5.7 hemi..
With all that has been said in the US and North American Market about the proper functioning of MDS, im unsure what to do as the oil filler cap states 5w-20... Australia being a hot country, i would have thought we would need at least a 30 or 40 weight viscosity so as to cover the ambient temperature here.......

DSIGNR, good point on our climate but the US have an extreme range of climates in their country too. Arizona for instance never seems to drop below about 20 degrees C and frequently has a string of days (month+) over 40 degrees C.

I have been after a contact in the local Chrysler Engineering team and will pursue this soon with my contact in the Chrysler HO.

Texas is a pretty hot country too and there is no variation allowed for climate, 5w20 for the MDS Hemi across North America. I think the Aussie manual has an error, would not be the first time, I have had several loose sheet addenda mailed out to correct errors in other manuals. The cap says 5w20 IMO this is correct and your dealer is a moron, as bad as US dealers and I did not think that was possible.
