Easy answer. It used to be ok but under the NCOP Victorian VSI8 advises that:
1. The overall diameter of any replacement rim and tyre must not be: - more than 15mm greater than the largest diameter tyre specified by the vehicle rnanufacturer for that model or vehicle series; or more than 15mm less than the srnallest diameter tyre specified by tne vehicle manufacturer for that niodel or vehicle series.
It's also worth noting:
The maximum allowable track increase:
• in the case of a rear axle with independent suspension-25 mm;
• in the case of other rear axles-50 mm; and
• in the case of a motor vehicle manufactured with a combination of front wheel drive, McPherson strut front suspension and negative scrub radius steering geometry, no increase in wheel track is permitted unless specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
• in the case of a motor vehicle fitted with a diagonally split braking system (i.e. one front wheel and opposite rear wheel on same hydraulic circuit), no change in the wheel track dimension is permitted.
What this means is that to achieve a 22" rim and stay inside the 15mm overall diameter AND inside the 25mm of extra track width you'd need to use a 255/35/R22 or similar rolling radius combination - that example lowers the overall diameter by 6.2 mm while widening the track by nothing.
Cheers
