Unhappy Handbrake/footbrake

Hi all,

Can I get some feedback regarding the performance of our respective handbrakes?
When first got my car I noticed that the hand brake wasn't holding the vehicle in place at all. Even on a slight incline the vehicle will always roll and rest on the Park lock. On steeper hills it makes a fairly loud clanking sound when you take it out of Park to engage a gear.
I took it back to Oakleigh Chrysler who tested it and said it was fine. They made a slight adjustment but they said it was ok for the most part.
Despite what they say it still rest on the Park lock.

Is anyone else experiencing this or am I on my lonesome??

Try Resumespeed's method here. I find that it works for me. There is still a clang sound when you release the brake, but there is no rolling into park. Might be easier on the tranny.

Park the transmission or Stamp the Footbrake ?

Just have to put more pressure on the emergency brake to get it to hold. Fairly typical of e-brakes.

Spock, I was following the thread that Ahbizmal refers to as well. It seems to me that you need to put a great deal of pressure on the pedal to lock the park brake on effectively. I think I am in the minority who always uses the park brake.

Sometimes I drive out of my garage and realise that I still have the park brake on when turning out of my driveway as it is not effectively engaged.

Yeah, I've driven with the damn thing activated as well. They're nowhere near as effective as the standard hand operated ones. The one in my SP23 was sensational.

Thanks all

I've tried all the hints and tips provided but it still does the same thing. Back to the dealer I suppose.

Handbrake Headache

Hello Spock1.

I don't have quite the same degree of movement in mine but it's certainly not like the handbrake I had on the WRX. I have found that by applying the "footbrake" while still on the brakes, it holds without resting on the transmission park lock. I kind of liken it to the hand brake on my Dad's old Nissan Patrol 4WD that clamped on the driveshaft or something - a little agricultural but effective. If you are taking it into the dealer, I got them to make some adjustment to brake release thing last time for a rattle and because it did not always seem to disengage the park brake completely and the alarm chime would scare the $*&t out of me when it suddenly went off.

Dunno if this helps you but....hey....gotta try!

Sean.

Thanks for the advice Sean.
I always apply the footbrake whilst still on the brakes so I'll get the service boys to take a look at it.

Just don't manhandle it, it along with the entire gas pedal assembly are plastic. I fully depress my e brake pedal but ever so gently. No big deal now, but when 3/36 is up it won't be covered.
