I think many of us would agree that dealer delivery charges are barely justifiable at the best of times. A friend of mine who once worked at a Holden dealership said that it cost the dealership around $400 but they charged it out at $1400.
It's just like the prices they charge for accessories, absolute BS.
Maybe AussieHemi could shed some light on dealer delivery charges.

I had mine redone after not being convinced it was done originally and it took all of about 3 hours. I've got a copy of the checklist and it really amounts to not much more than checking that the thing has been screwed together correctly and setting the various factory BEM settings.
Having said that it's no different to the $ 1495 you pay a Ford dealer to have their PD done. The better dealers (at least in Ford land) ensure that the car is presented in a detailed condition but it isn't a compulsory part of the process according to my Chrysler dealer. Just as well because mine wasn't! Nor does it seem to extend to removal of the underside surface rust that I got my Ford dealer to do instead.
I'd guess in the case of imports like the 300C some of that is possibly the dealer contribution to the work done by Patricks as well as the transport from wharf to dealer but that IS a guess.
Cheers
Russ
Hi Russ,
Apparently it covers transportation in Australia (between port, compliance plate place and dealer), compliance checks and affixing of plates, detailing, customs check(? wtf...). anyway, i thought the retail price is landed price, right? so don't quite get this customs thing... the other point, and it may show my ignorance, i thought compliance plates are fitted to cars in factory, as surely factory knows that the car is going to Australia so it has to be according to Aussie spec? otherwise, what do these compliance guys in Australia do? check the car with ADR rulebook in hand and tick it off point by point? i just don't get it.
be it as it may, i still think $2K is crap. i can sort of buy transport from port to dealer (depending where we are could be $500 i suppose...), check factory settings (say 2 hrs at $30/hr for mechanic?), detailing ($100-$150), couple of hours for admin staff to set up rego plates etc ($50), so all in all, less than $800. does it sound right? Don't these guys get a commish from DC?

6200GT
As many of you on this forum may already know, I work for a suburban Mazda dealership in Melbourne. Let me explain to you all exactly what Dealer Delvery really is.
Dealer delivery is a fee to cover transportation costs from the point of manufacturing to the end destination ie. the dealership. It also covers the PD or "pre delivery" of your new car. PD is basically a check and top up of all fluid levels in your car, setting of tyre pressures, removal of plastics and any other protective materials used in the transportation process and finally, a full clean and detail of your new car (which should include a polish). Now, as far as how much this all costs, let me tell you it is NO WHERE near the price a dealer actually charges for it. Dealer deliver costs or PD costs to a dealer tend to be around $350 - 400 per vehicle. The rest is just extra margin for the dealer to use during the negotiation process, or if a dealer sells a car at full retail price, it adds another $1000 or so into the profit on the deal.
6200GT - compliance plates are fitted in Australia and are the final "stamp" of approval before being released to the dealership for delivery to the customer. BTW, current labour rates for mechanics are around $75 - 80 per hour.
I guess you can say that DC and their relevant dealers are in a very strong position at the moment because demand is far outstripping supply (particularly SRT8's). This puts the power in the hands of the dealers when it comes to selling their cars because they don't have to discount to get a sale. Let me assure you that this is a VERY rare position to be in as a dealer and is a chance to make some strong profits while the supply/demand equation is unbalanced. If you are a good negotiator you could try and save the dealer delivery charges but on a car like the SRT8, I don't think you will find too many dealers who will budge at all. I know personally that as a car salesman myself, if i'm selling a car and I can't supply you one for months and months and I know that you will not be able to get one anywhere else, I will not move on price at all. If it means to me that I lose a sale, so be it, because I know the next person that walks in wanting one will pay full price for it.
It's ineveitable that once supply starts becoming more accessible and waiting times diminish, discounting will become more prevalent. Just remember this though - if we all start getting massive discounts at sale time it's going to totally screw us at trade in time as the re sale value just won't be there.
Hopefully that's cleared things up a little. I hope my boss doesn't read this!!

thanks for the post AUssiehemi, you have answered many things i was wondering myself, as i got a 300c the only discount i could get was the sunroof which i got for an extra $1050, but i had already made my mind up with getting this car and was prepared for no discount, so i felt like a got a deal when i left, and the free cap and shirt made it even better
Thanks for the explanation AussieHemi, looks like my $800 estimate was actually quite generous.
I haven't questioned the cost of a car itself, and i agree with you, given the supply/demand equation at the moment, there is probably not much that can be done in terms of getting the price down (and, as you said, if the demand continues then it is good news at the trade-in time). so if the dealer sells car at RRP i would think there is quite a healthy commission that goes with it and no need to fleece the customer on dealer delivery charges, right?
Wouldn't it be in dealer's interest to make sure that the buyer will continue his/her association with the dealer after the purchase, by bringing the car there for warranty checkups and maintenance? dealers do get paid for that as well, don't they? maybe that's a little bit of a bargaining chip the buyers may have in relation to dealer delivery charges? there is usually more than one DC dealer in town...
I almost sh*t my pants when I saw you guys paying 80 Grand for an SRT-8 then I saw you guys were from Australia.
Don't worry jacksonjw81, we pay with Pacific Pesos (although the Aussie $ is doing okay these days at A$1 equalling ~US$0.76.
QLDSRT8, you are getting a gouging on your Rego & 3rd party which I am surprised about. In VIC the total for Rego & Compulsory 3rd Party is about $550.

I know I am getting a gouging on the third party Hemi57,but not nearly as much as the gouging on the dealer delivery.Still if I don't pay it someone else will and I will go to the back of the que.I am expecting delivery in September.
The only good thing is Stamp Duty in QLD is only 2%.I think Perth is nearly 7%.

Yeah, and your fuel price is a fair bit lower than the rest of the country .
