any diesel converts out there in Oz?

I'm thinking of buying a CRD, never had a diesel before. Seems like most of the members on this Forum drive V8's, but the CRD is cruisy, powerful enough, quiet & not smelly!!! Anyone had experience with the CRD? At an advertised 8.2 km/l (combined) hard to beat! Can't understand why anyone would want to use 29kms/l as viewed on this forum. The rush as you drag off that Commodore at the lights would be quickly deflated when you find you're becoming more familiar with the servo attendant than your wife!!

Each to their own i reckon. If you don't mind not having the power of a V8, then the diesel is certainly a better alternative to the 6cyl in my opinion.

Domenic, you're absolutely right. Sorry, didn't mean to insult the V8 owners out there. To be honest, I'd love to have a drive of a V8, love power just like any other Aussie male (well, most of us), but won't 'cause I don't think I'd be able to get back into the V6! (Need it for work) According to the press V8 interest is waning with the massive fuel price hikes, but looking at this Forum they're just as popular as ever??!!

miguelito, welcome to the Forum .

From all reports the Diesel 300C is a gem. Take a look at the Diesel section early in the Forum where the UK members have about 9 months experience with the Diesel. The motor is straight from MB and excellent. Grunt, ie, Torque is excellent and makes for an effortless drive.

I for one am living in denial :-) My fuel is part of my salary sacrificed novated lease repayments so I just swipe a card and don't really feel the impact :-)

Fuel could go up to $4 a litre and I would still drive a V8. There is nothing like the sound of a healthy V8 idling let alone at full noise whilst taking a drive on my day off driving no-where in particular. Highway travelling is an absolute dream, sitting at 1200 rpm at 100, barely touching the throttle for 5 secs to overtake when needed. Besides there is nothing better to take your mind of a crappy day at work than having a nice cruise home and simply enjoying the ride.

Each to their own..but for me, I'll spend whatever it takes to enjoy the simple pleasures in life

Konvict, sorry to rain on your parade but the 300C & SRT8 do approximately 1800 rpm and 100 Ks. Too high in the revs for my liking. My old GTS did 1500 rpm at the same speed and the fueleconomy was outstanding for a 5.7 Lt Aussie stroker.

Nah havent even got my SRT8 yet...about 6 months till delivery. Was referring to my V8 Fairlane..would sit on 1400 revs at 100kph then drop down to 1200revs after sitting at a set speed for a few mins. Had an old XA GT before that..an EA falcon ex taxi that i put a 351 Windsor, toploader and detroit locker 9 inch into (541hp on straight lpg) and an old Hemi Pacer (6cyl) before that...always loved the V8's.

If your looking at diesel, and concerned about performance as well check out the startech website. German based tuning house specialising in Chrysler Jeep and Dodge for europe.

A performance chip can be fitted to the 3.0L CRD to improve power to 193kw @ 4000rpm and 580nM @ 1600 - 2800 rpm. Thats nice... but how about 7.2 secs 0 - 100? not too sluggish compared to the 6.4secs of the HEMI V8... i've also heard that when driven appropriately it will deliver better fuel economy than when in factory tune...

food for thought?
