'Blunt and Honest' - 1 week Ownership Review

Howdy.

I hope this will be blunt & honest review of my wheels, 1 week into ownership. I'm hoping to tap out something concise, like I wanted to read prior to purchasing.

Old Car - '02 Monaro
New Car - Black 5.7 Hemi 300c

Ok. Prelims. Shop around. Takes only 1 or 2 visits to get $65,000 for the car. I made mine $66,000 by adding tint and the aftermarket grill. Delivery time, again shop around, mine took 7 days from the order.

Delivery. The butterflys on the day are like the first day at school. Turning up to the dealer and having it sitting buffed in the showroom is a great feeling. Try to compose yourself and check for scratches, crap pre-delivery polishing/cutting, or faults. But hey, sign for it and get it out of there - check later.

First drive. The corners look miles away - They aren't. Anyone familiar with a commodore or alike will find that with a little confidence, the thing ain't that big. Engine was pretty/very tight for first few drives. Don't nurse the rev's during run in. Read forums enough and according to the dealer, drive it from day 1 like it is run in. It's now loosened up beautifully and only took 500 kms.

Likes (keep in mind compared to Monaro)-

Looks - We all know it.
Gearbox/Drivetrain - Smooth as silk during changes and fun to play with the auto change b/w gears.
Heated seats - Especially in Melb. Don't think I can go back to coldness.
Rear mirrors tilting down when reversing - Avoid gutter rash.
Grunt - Just when you think it has 'thrust' hard enough it powers again until you feel guity about the rev's.
Reverse led lights - On roof at rear. Hardly need to turn your head to reverse. Watch the distance close with the led's lighting up one by one as oblects get closer.

Dislikes -
beep beep beep all the bloody time (key still in, door open, lights on, check TPM, Airbags warming or whatever etc etc).
Plastics - I know I know really picky, but the indicator arrows are pretty plasic cutout-ish. Please don't slam me on this. My opinion.
Climate - It's got a low and a high on Auto. Can't Auto just be Auto?
Stereo controls - It's American so on/off & volume they are on the left, not the right. Still getting used to it. I know I can just use the steering wheel.
No Auto Lights - It's killing me!! I will take to it with a knife this weekend and remove that bloody lug stopping it.
Dirty - My fault (well my work insisted) it is black. It is filthy after 500 klms, and it will annoy me. Lesson to be learnt (again) it needs weekly washing.
Suspension - It bounces over speed humps. Veeeeery soft. Cornering doesn't bother me, as I didn't buy it as a sports car.
Doesn't like to start warm. Needs throttle. Think it will go back to the dealer on this one.

Overall.

Geeze I love this car. The motor is supurb. I can only imagine how the SRT must go. Way too much power for Melbournes over-policed roads just with the 5.7 under the bonnet.

Compared to the Monaro, it is so soft, and warm inside, you feel like you could get in and drive around Australia. Get back in the Mon, and it's so harsh and noisy with road noise and tram tracks gobble gobble... Plus, the Hemi feels quicker and seems to get up and go more easily.

Just Buy one. It's only been a week, but it continues to grow on me, not dissappoint.

Hope someone enjoys that if they are tooing & froing on making a desicion. And remember, just my opinion.

Cheers

Anthony

Andrew, that was a good honest critique.

I'll leave the plastics debate well alone

Anthony, I was the same. Stepped out of a tricked up 03 monaro (0-100km/hr in 5 seconds). The Hemi is great but they do need a little work. If you want to control the float, drop in a set of lowered "King Springs". They will also help it corner like a go kart. Get a K&N aircharger unit and change the exhausts (cats back - 2 1/2 inch flow through system). And last but by no means least - Superchip (ECU Update) - new one suitable for Oz conditions and fully adjustable will come out closer to X-Mas time.....
Once all this is done it should go the same if not harder than the SRT!! Ooops forgot to mention the diff - currently a 2.82 - need to update to a 3.5. This will get it into the early 5second mark on acceleration to 100km/hr. You have to wait fro the Superchip as you have to tell the ECU otherwise the whole car goes into limp mode and you can't get it out of third gear!!!!
Just remember one thing - no other V8 revs out as long and as hard as a Hemi V8!! Even in drive the damn thing holds onto around 5500rpm - the monaro never did that!!!
Mine is black also - pain in the arse but once its clean nothing looks hotter!!!!

Thanks all. Been out summing up the number plate holes. Have gone with Vic slim & slim personalised and they arrived today....

Oh and, has anyone else got difficulty starting warm? Does it stutter or snuff? Should it need throttle?
