300C Safety Recall

I just received my letter from DCA:

" CONDITION
A software problem may exist in the Front Control Module (model 300C) which could affect the correct functioning of the directional 'telltale' lights in the instrument cluster in the event of a failure to an external turn indicator globe. In this case the driver does not receive poper feedback when a turn indicator globe fails"
Rectification
The respective controlmodule will be reprogrammed with new software by the dealer free of charge.

I mentioned this a while back, that my indicators weren't flashing quite right. I thought it was something to do with the silver star park globes, so i pulled them out!

Hey B, do you mean you haven't seen the Recall letter? or you haven't seen the problem?

Snail mail to Queensland takes a bit longer than to my place just around the corner from DCA HQ (well a few K's away).

Hi All
Got the letter but it seems to be directed only at AUS cars. Searched the other forums but didn't see any mention of other countries with this problem?
Can we be so special that only AUS cars have this firmware glitch? Sounds suspicious to me

Not sure what this means:
"could affect the correct functioning of the directional 'telltale' lights in the instrument cluster in the event of a failure to an external turn indicator globe. In this case the driver does not receive proper feedback when a turn indicator globe fails"

Could it mean that if an external turn signal globe fails then the linked telltail dash indicator should not light up so that we should suspect a bulb failure.
This would be neat idea if this is how it's supposed to work.

Can anyone enlighten us please?
Conceptb, have you noticed any difference since the "fix"?

I'm gonna pull out an indicator globe tomorrow & see what happens
(if it's not raining)
Cheers!

The Safety Recall is only for export models with side repeater indicator lights.

The following web site may be of interest.

Hi SRT861
Thanks for the link. I'll check the side indicator lights also.
Did you notice this warning in the doc.

CAUTION: Follow the flash reprogramming procedure carefully on LX/LE
models. The FCM does not support abort/recovery. If an error occurs,
the FCM will require replacement.
Yikes!
Have faith my son

Yes, I saw the CAUTION. Hope my dealer can get it right first time when I take it in for the recall.

If you want to check the operation of the directional "telltale" light in the instrument cluster before the FCM is re-programmed, you may have to remove 2 external turn indicator globes on either the right OR left side, to bring up the dash light. After FCM re-program, removing one globe should bring up the dash light.

Hi SRT861
Found this on page 50 & 65 of 2006 Owners manual "If either indicator flashes at a rapid rate, check for a defective outside light bulb"

Just confirming that removing 1 external indicator bulb is not enough to bring up the proper dash light telltale response. It flashed away merrily at the same rate as if all bulbs were ok.

I wouldn't consider this a drastic safety issue but more a convenience issue. Gotten used to regular checking of brake & turn signal lights in the garage by watching the reflection on the walls.

Then again, NSW cars undergo a registration check every 12mths (new cars have 3 yrs grace) where all external lights are checked and faulty bulbs have to be replaced.

It's probably worthwhile having the "fix" done though I won't be rushing in for this one. Cheers!
