Anyone got the 300CRD diesel 3.0Ltr in Aus

Hi,
I am new here and was wondering if anyone has the 300CRD.
I would be interested to know. Don't even know if they are available yet in Aus.

Thanks and sorry if I am asking an obvious question, as said new here and new to Chrysler but love the shape of the 300.

Merry Christmas to all

Welcome JandG .

Yup the 300CRD is available here in OZ. bvdwyer, our only Tassy member is a proud owner and we have another member here in Melbourne (humble apologies but the user handle escapes me at the moment) with one.

They are an outstanding car with awesome economy and surprisingly good performance. If you check in the European / Diesel section the members in the UK are very enthusiastic about them. They can be chipped and produce some very impressive Power & Torque and of course performance figure if you are that way inclined.

Hi JandG.

I have a 300 CRD in Aus.

Have had it since 15 October and just clocked 10,500 klm.

Goes well with no issues, fuel efficiency is great.

Anything you need to know in particular?

Happy Christmas.

Bernard

Howdy JandG:

I also have a CRD (although not from Melboune; in the bush near Wodonga). Always pleased to give constructive advice. I am sure you will love it. I have few minor issues with it, however it's cool.

Have a merry Christmas
Kelvin

Interesting you have a caravan hooked up to your car in your pic.

That is precisely what I would want to do in the next 12 month or so. We are planning to cruise around Australia for a number of years and I have been looking at all my options for a new towing vehicle. I arrived at the Chrysler 300CRD because I just love the shape of this car. Never thought I would even look at this brand. Now, I noticed on in the car spec that the 300CRD is capable of 2000Kg towing. Can you advise what the maximum towball weight is as per the handbook. I would have thought these cars could tow more weight with the power and torque available.

How does yours tow?

Thanks heaps
Gerard

Hi Gerard:

This may be long winded: (you can send me a private message if you like and I will give you my phone details. I will be in Blackburn 2morrow, should you want to catch up.)

My van weighs 1600kg empty. 17x8 in body. Overall 22 feet. The car sits perfectly level. The rear suspension is very stiff and doesn’t sag. I am not sure if it has self leveling suspension or not. I have read on this forum that 2006 models don’t have it. I do use a Hayman Reese hitch. That’s essential. The tow bar is a dreadful design (shouldn’t be legal). It hangs far too low. However, due to the relatively short axle to tow ball distance as compared to other vehicles, there isn’t a great deal of apparent leverage on the rear of the 300C. If you get what I’m saying. It doesn’t bottom out as easily as it appears it will with a laden van attached. See other images in my gallery.
My last tow car was a Tickford 6cyl EL Falcon (still have). It towed magnificently compared to the 5ltr Caprice prior to it. The Falcon really sucked the fuel at 100klm, couldn’t use the AC or else it would overheat in the hills. Even with a heavy duty well maintained cooling system.
The 300CRD absolutely pulls like a teenager. Sitting on 100klm with AC on up hills, still able to pass other vehicles. Averages 15 litres to 100km at any highway speed towing. Far better than any previous tow car I have owned. Especially at that speed.
Now the only down side I can think of is; should you try to accelerate form stopped quickly when towing, it all gets scary. It has an almighty flat spot, like an old heap crap fitted with a Holley double pumper and blocked accelerator discharge ports. I have been involved with Diesel’s for far too long to be convinced that it’s turbo lag. However, I’m always prepared to listen.

As for the hand book details on tow weights. Oops can’t find it. Riveting late night reading .

Regards kelvin.

Well, our plan is to tow a GEIST caravan which does not require a weight distribution hitch as it puts only 100Kg on the towbar and has a tare weight of 1500Kg and is 23ft long.

I will have to have a look at the towbar setup on the Chrysler 300.

Have you got the sedan or the tourer. The tourer would suit me I think.

Blackburn a bit too far for me my man. Thanks anyway. Love to hear more before committing to fork out my hard earned money..............will send you a PM

Kelvin, great of you to chime in with very useful first hand information . I especially liked your "teenager" acronym .

Sad to hear about the flat spot though. You should maybe quiz Murph_the_Cat on the chip mods the UK guys are doing. Apparently it makes a massive difference .
