Brake Noise

When I had my oil changed last week I had the dealer check the front brakes. The first 5 or 10 minutes of stopping results in a grinding kinda noise when I RELEASE the brake pedal. No noise when the brake is applied. They greased the callipers but I still have the same noise. Anyone else? Any ideas?

Sounds as if your cylinder piston or pistons on a front brake is/aren't retracting fully. Expect the offending unit will have to be replaced.

Try the following bedding technique and see if your brake problems go away: http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

If you still have unusual noises when applying the brakes, then bring it back to your dealer for warranty service. But I expect the bedding process will fix things for you.

How many miles on your car?

Wow, I had no idea there was a break in procedure for new brakes like that. Thanks for the info.

Thanks Zdeck, I'll try this. I have 7500 miles on my car. It didn't start until around 5K or when the weather got cooler and damper.

Well I brought my C to the dealer today to have the brake noise checked. Grinding sound when I RELEASE the brake pedal, no noise when applied. The tech said he drove it and didn't hear anything. I took him out in it and released the brake a little slower than normal. There is a definite grinding sound. He took me out in a brand new C and the brakes made the same sound! The tech says it's normal!

I need to find some open road and try DZeckhausen's bedding process. Does anyone have the same noise when you slowly release the brake pedal after a complete stop?

My C does not make the grinding noise you are describing, the brakes are very quiet. I had a BMW 528i that made the same noise you are describing and continued to do so even after replacing the rotors and pads. Please let us know if DZeckhausen's bedding process works for you if we ever run into this.

Let me make sure I understand. You're saying the grinding noise occurs while the car is stationary, following a stop? Or is the noise happing just as the car is starting to roll forward again, while you are still applying some very light braking force?

Sounds like the pads are vibrating when you release the pedal slowly, just enough to let the car inch ahead a bit. Every car I've owned with an auto. trans. does this. Sounds normal to Me.
