Centric pads

Last week I replaced both the front and rear pads with the Centric Posi-Quiet pads from Zeckhausen. Install was a breeze.

After bedding them I've found that they are a significant improvement over the stock pads. Much more quiet and smooth. More importantly they perform better as well.

I was at Mid-Ohio yesterday for some road racing and I found no or very little fade after sessions of up to 25 minutes and speeds over 110 mph. The brakes were pretty pissed at me after the runs but they held up well. This car ain't no lightweight.

Good to hear Todd, but there may be some who'll disagree with you performance wise that they match the OEM's. The fact is they're so easy to change you could easily go back to the OEM's, drive to the track and swap back to Posi Quiets on return. I went with Posi Quiets with 43 km's on my Jeep and couldn't be happier. Even in the short time the OEM's were on it I delveloped a gouge in the left front rotor.

Road racing with the Centric Posi Quiet pads? Yikes! It would not be my expectation that these pads should perform better at the track than OEM pads, unless the OEM pads were completely worn.

In general, customers have noticed slightly less initial bite and slightly higher pedal effort required with the Posi Quiet pads, but the vast majority have felt the compromise was worth the clean wheels and the reduction or elimination of brake noise and rapid rotor wear. Again, it may simply have been the case that your original pads were worn to the backing plates or, if you have a 2005 or 2006 model with plain (not slotted) rotors, it's possible your OEM pads had developed some glazing that resulted in a reduction in their performance.

While the Centric Posi Quiet pad has been and continues to be an extremely popular product, I want to make sure customer expectations are properly set. Most customers have not reported an improvement in performance (i.e., bite and friction level) over the OEM pads. The OEM pads are relatively aggressive.

I am in the market (overdue actually) to replace my pads. I recall 2 different models of Centric (or Rotex) 102 and 104? (Not certain) Which do you prefer Dave and why?

Thanks!

You're thinking about the Centric C-Tek pads, which are their entry level pads, manufactured for Centric Parts by an independent factory in Canada. The C-Tek pads do a fantastic job of eliminating brake dust, but they have no shims, so they tend to squeal, especially when the car is wet or lives in humid climates. The Rotex Gold pads use the same friction compound, manufactured by the same factory in Canada. The only difference is the addition of a "decorative" stainless steel shim so they can be sold as a "premium" pad. Without a composite shim layer, the stainless shim is ineffective at reducing noise. Interestingly, Rotex Gold was first claimed to be a higher performance pad than C-Tek. The rug was pulled out from under that claim when the pad edge codes and box markings proved they were, in fact, the same pads! I loved my C-Teks when I had them on my SRT8, prior to the StopTech big brake kit installation.

The Centric Posi Quiet Semi Metallic pads came out months later and were an improvement over the C-Tek/Rotex pads in several respects. The composite shims and pad compound makes them extremely quiet, even in the rear calipers of the Jeep SRT8, which tended to squeal with the OEM pads. The Posi Quiet pads have a higher maximum operating temperature, higher initial bite, and higher overall friction level than the C-Tek/Rotex pads. Thus they require noticeably less pedal effort than the C-Teks. And, since the Posi Quiet pads are scorched as a final step in the manufacturing process, there is less initial ("green") fade when you're first using them or bedding them in and much less smoke pouring from the wheels.

Bottom line - the Centric Posi Quiet pads are an all around better choice than the C-Tek or Rotex Gold. A set of front and rear Posi Quiet pads costs about half of what a set of OEM rear pads cost at your dealership. Your wheels will be clean, your rotors will last longer, and the performance hit is not as dramatic as the C-Tek/Rotex alternatives.

ALWAYS a fountain of knowledge, THANK YOU. Now, please point me in the direction of where I can purchase from you.

Thanks again!

I've still got my C-Teks on my car and haven't had a problem with them. I changed the OEM's on my Jeep to the Posi Quiets at 43 kms and even thought I haven't bedded them yet they're Positively Quiet.

Sorry! I should have given you a link. Here you go: 300C SRT8 Products

And here's the link to the installation instructions I wrote up a while back: How-To: Installing low-dust brake pads on an SRT8

Centric makes the Posi Quiet pads in 3 compounds: Semi Metallic, Ceramic, and Extended Wear. The only Posi Quiet compound they make for the SRT8 is the Semi Metallic. So that makes picking the right pad for that car easy.

For the 300C 5.7 liter, you have a choice of Posi Quiet Ceramic or Posi Quiet Extended Wear. The Extended Wear is more suited to fleet use, light trucks, and SUVs. It has lower performance, but a very high maximum operating temperature. The Posi Quiet Ceramic is more well rounded and is the best choice for the 300C (non-SRT8).

Here's a link to the products for your car: 300C 5.7 liter Products
