Getting Old vs Break job

I haven't written anything in a while so i thought I'd talk about my Break Job.

I've been doing my own breaks since my first car back in '84 a Buick Regal. My dad and I would always do the break ourself its such a simple job.And back then there were rear Drum breaks still not that hard. You could do a job in the garage in about 2hrs.
So I'm in the garage yesterday doing the breaks on Amy's Maggie new drilled and slotted and pads and the winter tires. Its quite just me siting on the cold floor, same as its been since '84 only the old mans not there looking over my shoulder telling me how to do the job.I start thinking back to all the Saturdays we spent tinkering with cars and sitting on this same cold floor. Then i smile cause its not as cold as it use to be, I installed a heater and insulated the garage plus added more lights. And 2 years ago i added on to the old garage. All the things the old man complained about back on those tinkering Saturdays are gone.So i think what do i have to complain about, then i find something. It didn't hit me till today the acks and pains of sitting on that cold floor. I can barely move now and what my dad was always complaining about didn't matter it could have been a perfect garage it was the lessons he was teaching to bad he never got to the getting old part.

Nice post Scarbs,

Don't worry I bet your old man is still there in spirit laughing when you pinch your fingers between the pads

Sitting on cold concrete floors can give you 'piles' of problems. The old days were good because cars were alot easier to work on.

I don't think Dad and I ever worked on our cars in the winter... never really had much of a garage as I recall, never one that could hold two cars until he built the two-wide and four-long building in retirement that he wanted... and I think some of the oldest "sheds" had dirt floors!

nice one Eric....i envy you in a way....my Dad was never a car guy so i missed out on all that 'bonding' although we just did it in different ways i guess.

Actually, its the other way round now - we spend time in the garage tinkering, but its me who is doing the teaching!

Pretty cool stories guys! I know my dad had a few cool cars in his youth but family came along (a total of 6) so did the station wagon and then van which he faithfully maintained by himself on an outdoor driveway. I was amazed when he changed out a tranny by himself once. Now through the power of the forums I've learned a lot and show/tell him what I do to my car and inside I think he gets a kick out of it...come to think of it maybe he's thinking that my "van" or "station wagon" are on their way too, hmmm.

Speaking of Vans.
My Dad had Vans in the 70 and 80s. We use to take trips in them all over America.I remember playing spaceship in the Van it had all these cool buttons to turn on lights and stuff. It was a green Ford van that i first kissed an older girl in.The old man always was a Ford Man till I talked him into a Dodge Caravn in 92,he owned that one till he pasted. Makes we want to buy a van and custom mod it now. Aww getting old brings back all those stupid memories.
