When wired correctly the speaker cone will move outward when it hits. If it is wired backwards, the cone moves inward when it hits. This greatly cuts down on sound volume and quality, "a hell of a lost less than optimal". When the installer says it will still work, I guess, technically he's right.

The installer was correct, and there is nothing wrong with the direction
the speaker moves. The idea around creating sound is to move the air.
Unless you have a poorly made speaker, it should be able to create sound
properly regardless of polarity.
The one thing you MUST be certain of is that all speakers are wired with
the SAME relative polarity.
there are some exceptions, however. In a high end competition system,
sometimes the installer will wire certain speakers (say a pillar mounted mid)
in opposite polarity during the tuning phase in an effort to try and get
the sound stage set up properly.
