Google Earth-VW plan navigation system

Volkswagen of America Inc., said Friday it is working on a prototype vehicle which features Google Inc.'s satellite mapping software to give drivers a bird's eye view of the road ahead.

The in-car navigation map system will use a three-dimensional display so passengers can recognize where they are in relation to the surrounding topography.

Interesting, this is from the company that still uses CD based NAV with 9 discs for the USA. I love google earth but the latest pics are at least two years old some 5 years old and I am not sure if that will be entirely practical.

Agreed, and in fact the zoom isnt all that good when you get close, plus it gets blurry.
Also, do you think that will be a free service?

I'll take a crappy nav if they could jsut tie it into the traffic systems, I dont need sat pics, just keep the normal maps lines and work on adding in traffic data, that would be WAY more valuable to me

Out here in cali Cal Trans offers a portable traffic map doo-kickey, so I know they have the 2 techonologies, they just need to merge them and make all of our driving lives better

Agreed, some shots are pretty clear like big cities, I can see people at the Washington Monument yet in my county I can't even see a rooftop because of high resolution vs low resolution camera shots, they are always trying to upgrade for the best views but to cover the entire earth takes some time.

Don't see this happening any time soon.

You can get to streets and blocks level of detail only in the Hi-Rez regions... i.e., major metropolitan areas. There is way too much of this country (at least) that are covered via low-rez imagery and would be totally useless.
