Essex Keypad Instalation

HI All,

Was wondering if anyone has added an Essex Keyless entry system that consists of a 5 button keypad that is mounted to the door. This is similar to the factory Ford vehicles that have this option. Walk up and enter a code to unlock your doors.

If you have done this mod can you describe how you wired it, is there a door lock/unlock module on the 300C I can tap into with a negative output, where is it located? How about mounting in the door, lots of room in there for the keypad?

We are a limo company that has an all ford fleet except for our new 300 coming and many things we do for security revolve around that keypad feature. Hope it is going to be an easy install!!

Here is the Item I am talking about:
The KE-1600 Keyless Entry System

Thanks for any info or guidance!!

smwalker, welcome to the forum. I don't think you can post links until you have four posts. I know what you're talking about w/o seeing the actual product. Its a neat idea. I've not seen anyone w/ this yet - but I've only been around for a few months. Hopefully some of the 'older' guys/gals can help you out.

If you get a chance, tell us more about yourself and your rides here in the New Member Intro section: New Member Introductions and Assistance

Again, welcome aboard and good luck!

Thanks guys, Just hoping someone has already done it and can give some pointers. Even pointers on taking off the door panel will help (have not searched the forum for that yet). Either way I will post a tutorial of how the install goes so anyone else thinking of it can get an idea of what it takes.

I will go introduce myself in the new members section and check back later!

Thanks Again!

OK tackled this tonight and here are the details:

So I got the Essex KE-1601 for around 200.00 from - Keypad Keyless Entry: A1 Electric Online Store

I also got a module called a data bus door lock interface and transponder bypass. What this does is takes the negative output from the keypad and send a signal to the cars computer to lock or unlock the doors. At the same time it turns off the factory alarm and does all the convenience feature just like your remote. This particular product is also used when installing a remote started kit but I did not use any of those features so I really only had to hook up 5 wires just to make it control the door locks. This was $66.00 from - Vehicle Specific Auto Alarms & Remote Car Starters - CHDL7-PK2 Chrysler/Dodge

First location of the keypad - I would have liked to had it above the door handle (just for ease of use) and there was room to squeeze it in behind the door but the metal on the top of the door handle has a little more of a curve than the metal below the handle so I decided to play it safe and go below as I do not know how the keypad will sit within a curved surface.

SO I tapped off the area and located my template (just eyeballed level) so the overlay sticker sat about 1/4 inch below the door handle concave in the door.

Then I gave each of the 7 holes a good center punch then drilled them all out with a 3/16 inch drill bit:

Then I taped up the outer two holes to make sure I did not Drill them out to the larger diameter. (no recovering from that mistake)

I then used a 9/16 Inch drill bit to make the 5 center holes larger. You could also use a step bit for this.

Carefully deburred the metal inside and outside the door and this is what I had:

And this is the keypad mounted up (held in place by two phillips screws) without the overlay:

And here is the overlay stuck on

And from a distance:

Then I wired up the Module and keypad:

I got power and ground right in the door off one of the harnesses. Then had to run one wire into the interior of the vehicle for the data bus connection. The rubber boot that links the door to the car pops out with a little persuasion and you are able to take the boot off so you can fish the wire through next to the existing connector that's is already there. The hardest part was connecting the data bus wire to an orange and white wire that is near the ignition switch. My diagram said it was accessible just by taking off the piece around the ignition but I found they have moved it to the right side of the ignition switch as opposed to on top like my diagram showed. So I had to take the radio out to get to the area to connect the data wire. But the entire installation only required about 6 connections:
12 volt continuous Power for keypad and bypass module (connected to same vehicle wire in door)
Ground for keypad and bypass module (connected to same vehicle wire in door)
Door lock (Keypad to module connection)
Door unlock (Keypad to module connection)
Data Bus wire (up near ignition switch)
Keypad programing button (single wire connection with ground joining the other grounds)

After all the hook ups were made I programmed my code into the keypad (easy) and just turned on the key to program the bypass module (no programming needed). Worked like a charm.

Took about 6 hours as finding the wire near the ignition was a stumbling block.

If I missed anything, I bet I did, ask away be glad to give details best I can.

Well I guess I look at these cars more as tools to make moeny with than like I look at my own car as my baby, but I would still cut into my own car if it was for a good reason!! I will post some full length pictures today in the new member area message I started.

Thanks Truth, I have done this before but it was on 2 hummer H2's before. The 300 was a litttle more difficult maybe just becase the door was not as roomy as a hummer!
