Got my remot starter...

HI there.

Just received my remote starter. I got it from Wyckoff Chrysler, shipped next day no hassles, great guys to deal with.

I am planning to do the install tomorrow.

Please guys, if any one has an advice on the install, or any thing to watch out for, please post it. I am going to do a write up on the install, after I finish my final exams. So please make a contribution, any small advice will count, help me so I can do write up on this topic, as the instructions are not super clear for an average person to understand.

Thanks,

Ahmed.

When routing wires through the firewall, the best path I could find is alsngside the parking brake cable. Just thread a coat hanger type wire (with end bent to avoid sharp edge) between the parking brake cable and the sleeve that guides the cable through the firewall. Use this wire to pull your wires.

Consider skipping the horn connection. The repeated honking will drive you batty.

When making the connection to a coil, any coil will do. The only reason for the coil connection is a safety feature where the engine shuts down if the revs reach three times idle. Any coil will do.

There is a small plastic piece(I think it's called the DNA module) with numerous (forty or so) male spades. This snaps into a larger plastic piece that has matching female receivers. Make dang sure you have everything lined up correctly before snapping together. In my second install, I unknowingly bent several spades. It took awhile to figure out what was the problem and quite awhile to fix the damage.

If you're going to purchase the two way option, now is the time to do it. Otherwise, you're going to be removing the antenna you just mounted and reroute the antenna wire you just routed.

After the install, when you are going through the settings, consider changing the default shut down time of 10 minutes to the optional 15 minutes.

You have to remove the trim on the pillar (between the door and windshield) to route the antenna wire. It scared the heck out of me when it let loose. I thought I had broke something. When you pry it with a flat tool, it will appear like you're not getting anywhere, when, SNAP, the thing pops off and scares you.

Be careful mounting the hood tilt switch. You have to install it a little different from the instructions to keep from bending the bracket when you close the hood.

Frank, great tips! I am interested in the remote start. Which one do you recommend?

My only experience is with the Chrysler unit. It's "plug and play" design is really great.

Some of the aftermarket units have desireable features; but, from what I have read the installation of some requres embedding a key in your dash and require a much greater number of splices. If you are going to self install, the Chrysler unit is back yard friendly.

great write up frank! i had the dealer install it as part of the new car purchase... I thought it was plug and play until i opened the hood and saw wires running every which way.

The one going to the driver side head is for the Coil?

the other two running to the fuse area are for the power / horn? where is the horn wired in?

anyone have the install guide in PDF format or can fax it to me so i can redo some of the wires?

also thanks for telling me what the thing under the hood was for.

The install is pretty easy, the hardest part for me was releasing the parking brake cable. I broke one of the 'tangs' loose from the cable itself, but it still works.

Also, be careful around the brake pedal switch, it clearly states in the manual that if the switch is removed it must be replaced, but I was able to get mine loose without any damage to the switch. I somehow twisted the brake switch case and it released without any problems..
