Question Nav memory card?

I remember reading somewhere about optional memory for the Nav system to contain more street level maps and local POIs. With the stock memory card, you get street level detail only in your region (I suppose this is the area around the dealer?) Anybody know how big this region is, and how you get the optional larger memory card so support multiple or even nation-wide street level detail. Is this a dealer upgrade option?

Any info on this?

I think everything is on the DVD. Memory may help is scroll faster (caching the DVD).

There isn't a memory card option. All the data is on the DVD. You can go into the options on the NAV unit to turn the display of POI categories off and on. I find the nationwide street level detail very good. You do know that you can zoom in on the NAV unit right??

I guess I my memory must be getting confused with something else. Sounds like it works like it should. I have an Kenwood Excelon 911 w/Nav in another car and you have to select a region of the country to get street level data, which is easy enough to do through the touch screen menus. I assume it caches an index for searches, etc, but all the info is on the DVD also.

I do not have my C yet, but am looking forward to it!

I noticed in the manual upgraded DVD's cost $150 whenever new versions come out. Seems a little steep to me though.

the stock NAV is as stated DVD based.

I ran into the same price surprise when I wanted to get a map update for my Kenwood Nav system in my other car. Seems like the Nav manufacturer would want you to keep current on your mapping software, instead at that price I am sure people just live with out-of-date maps.

Since the maps are on DVD, you don't suppose there is a way to make an "archival" copy?

There's lots of DVD copying software available, ie: Clone DVD, DVD Decrypter, DVD X Copy Platinum or you can make a disk image using Magic ISO maker. The manual says you can make copies for your own use, so I take it there's no protection on the DVD. There are ways around everything.

The East coast/ West coast Dual DVD Upgrade from Alpine on my Alpine unit is $300. I bought half the Set (east coast) from a guy on ebay for $100.
