Navigation problem please help

My navigation has recently been giving me problems. I keep getting an error message sating cannot read dvd please reinsert. I have tried everything to no avail. I also tried buying the new version dvd thinking it was the disk but that also has not worked. Could anyone shed some light on my situation or know of a company that repairs oem navigation units. It is only 2 years old.
Thanks in advance guys.
Joe

Mine gave me a DVD read error a couple months ago and when I ejected the disc it had a thin layer of very fine dust on it. After I cleaned the disc it has worked fine. Have you tried one of the head cleaning discs in the unit, may have some dust on the optics of the head that the cleaning disc will "sweep" off. I have used them successfully in slot load CD drives on Mac laptops that wouldn't read discs.

I am a little leary on using a disk cleaner. It says in the manual not to use one. What about the air dusters. would that be to powerfull and maybe make things worse?

The cleaner is just a disk with a small row of very fine soft brushes that simply sweep over the head, no liquid solutions or anything. I don't think it could hurt it, shouldn't make it any worse than it is. I have not had luck using compressed air on computer drives, just blows the dust around and may have enough air pressure to knock the delicate floating head assembly out of alignment.

Whats your opinion, do you think it could just be dust on the head or would you think there something wrong with it. I got an estimate of about 500, seems like a lot.

What are they going to do for 500? It doesn't make much sense to put that much into it when u can get one on ebay for about that.

If you're going to have to have it repaired or replaced anyway, I would try a lens cleaner disc first.
Philips DVD Laser Lens Cleaner - Wal-Mart

It won't be able to play the disc like a normal DVD player would but all it needs to do is spin up and try to read it and the job is done, then it should kick it back out. Not sure why they say not use them in the manual, I don't see what harm it could do.

Mike

I've tried those optical lense cleaners and i like them.. i dont see how much it can harm the lense so i'd say try that... better than paying 500
