Alarms and Keys

I am getting an aftermarket alarm which will render the Chrysler Key Buttons useless. Do they make a smaller key that you can get?

You may need one of those stock buttons if your alarm goes out of service.

Besides, alternate Chrysler keys are not cheap (about $80 for the basic if I remember right), and are not that much smaller...

You would also have to pay for programming.

I would just save money and time, and stick with the stock key. It already works.

That's what I did with my Viper alarm.

You may consider a 3rd key, because 1 of your 2 existing stock keys will be used to make the alarm function properly.

Because of this you will be left with only 1 stock key, and if you lose it, you are screwed.

Here's how my setup looks now after putting in the Viper alarm:

1. Stock key with Viper 2-way remote

2. 3rd key purchased as backup, and additional Viper remote

Thanks for the info. What programming will I have to pay for? To use a non button chrysler key?

Hmmm, read your owners manual closely, I know other DCX products, you can program yourself if you have the other two keys.

And honestly, myself, I would never get an alarm that did away with the stock system. With that system inplace the only way to steal the car is to flatbed the sucker, or steal your key. Pretty complex system, really.

Add on a tracker, maybe, but not one that kills the Sentry key.

AS a matter of fact, vehiclelocate.net might be something to look up. The One Lap of America SRT-4 of Dale Seeley had this system, it was great to be able to track him over the course of the event.

When you buy a replacement key from Chrysler, it needs to be programmed to match your car's chip. Otherwise it will not unlock or start the car.

It's not as simple as cutting it to fit.

It needs to be programmed with all other keys at the same time.

By the way, your factory security measures should still work even if you put in an aftermarket alarm. They are not obsolete.

In a way, you have almost have two alarms.

DJ, there are two prcedures to do this. One is using the dealer tool. The other is called customer learn. If you have the two factory keys, you can get a blank one cut and use your two to "teach" the new keys chip to the car.

http://www.vintagemusicprojects.com/...J98/etj_8q.pdf

See page 4. I know that's a Jeep book, but SKIS is SKIS, across the DCX lineup.

It can be done at any time. The car can learn up to eight different keys.

OEM Alarm

Hey,
let me just say that the alarm from chrysler is great, a little expensive, but well worth it.
they use the same key that came with your car so u dont need any other remotes. i have the remote start alarm and i love it. i use the same remote key that came with the car and i love it.
plus if anything happens, its covered under your warranty.
