Kind of on hold right now. Everything is functional now, so I lost a bit of drive to get it all finished off, but I will dig back in and finish the details soon.
Still need to...
- figure out VES issue
- finish the control panel
- figure out my glove box plan with the A/V switch and USB drives
- rewire the glove box
- replace glove box light
- replace bezel (I busted a bunch of tabs... ugh)
- readjust the headunit bracket to fit trim piece
- replace crossovers on 3.5's
- finish the Big 3
- possible new battery
- I'm sure there's more........
So that's a short To Do List. But again, I'm riding around loving it right now so I'm not too pressed to get it finished immediately, but there is certainly still some work to do. I'm going to knock out a couple things in the coming weeks, but I think I'm taking some time off work for the holidays, so hopefully I can finish all of the details then.
I did get one thing done today. I ended up ordering new high pass crossovers. The 150 Hz ones that I had were working fine, but I wanted to get more out of my sub channel and I was nearly maxing out that amp channel. So the only option was to get more out of the headunit - I was previously set on a listening level of about 25 out of the 40, so I had plenty of room.
Retuned it at about a 30 volume level, and I felt the dash 3.5's were starting to clip a bit. So I ordered some new 300 Hz crossovers for them. Got em swapped out and now I'm easily at 30 without any sort of clipping... allowing me to get more out of the gain on the sub channel. Sounds better than ever now.
And it's funny - the sub just eats up as much power as I can give it and asks for more. But all four 6x9's absolutely scream with only about 35% gain. I find that strange, but oh well - it sounds great so I'm happy.
And how about my first complaint?? Well, it's small, but the Clarion is sometimes slow... like it needs some more RAM. It's only bugged me a couple times, and I am a picky SOB, but I thought I'd mention the bad with the good. Aside from that though, the Clarion is sweet - great sound quality and all of the options I was looking for. Very happy overall.
Making some plans to get some work done on this over the holidays. To be continued...
Yeah, those are what I was telling you about. I did move up to a higher frequency cut off. My JL 3.5's can handle the lower frequency according to their specs, but I've had to tune my system to get more bass - so the amp's sub channel is high and the 6x9 channels are powered very low. With the 3.5's running off of the headunit, I figured it was dumb for me to try to have them cover the mid range - especially since the 6x9's strongly cover that entire range. Hence, I moved up to a higher frequency crossover. As a matter of fact, I might even move up higher and almost treat the 3.5's like tweeters - because that's really all of the fill that I need out of them. That way I could also get more volume from the HU before they clip = which means more power to the sub channel. Hope that makes sense.

Hey...I got the same problem....holy crap. Those dash speakers are so loud....and my gain is up way to high on my bass.
I found 300hz crossovers on ebay for 7.99 a pair. Says is protects 5 inch speakers tho....will those work ya think? You remember who you bought yours from? Thanks bud.

Yeah, a crossover is a crossover for this type at least, IMO. So I think the ebay ones would be fine. But I have been getting mine direct from Crutchfield. Although I find them to be overpriced for audio equipment, they are actually a great source for installation stuff. They sell them with your choice of 150Hz, 300Hz, 600Hz, and 800Hz. And they're only $10 shipped. Might be wrong, but I think I remember them coming in a PAC-Audio package. So I'd recommend going with Crutchfield - I'm sure ebay would be fine, but for only $2 more you'll know you have a quality crossover.
And since you just reminded me of this, I just ordered a pair of 600Hz. So if you want a set of 300Hz and are willing to wait, I'll see if I like the 600Hz better and then my 300Hz would be available. Still have my first set of 150Hz laying around here somewhere too.

sounds like it's time for a small amp with an adjustable crossover or an outboard crossover and small amp for the 3.5s so you can adjust the level without having to boost the other amps.

You might be right. I've been trying to avoid another amp, but may end up going that way at some point... but I'd probably also go for an independent sub amp at that time too.
So....... Is there such thing as an adjustable crossover that I could use in-line on the signal from the HU to the 3.5's without using an amp?? I know I've seen some of those crossovers that come with component sets that appear to be adjustable.
