Ok, ive been on forums for the last couple of years but I still dont understand 1 (well many but mainly this one!)

What do people mean when they say "No PUN intended"

Sorry if thats a stupid question but I cant make any sense of it other than punishment and that doesnt make sense! LOL

The pun in the phrase "no pun intended" is not short for punishment. www.m-w.com defines 'pun' as:

"the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound"

That phrase is meant to be used when you say something that sounds funny but you may not intended it to be or sound funny.
