Chrysler Officially Bankrupt: Merger With Fiat A Done Deal

At a mid-day press conference President Barak Obama made the official announcement that Chrysler will in fact file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Included in the announcement was the news that Chrysler has also reached an agreement with Fiat.

"I can report that the necessary steps have been taken to give one of America's most storied automakers a new lease on life," Obama said.

Praising Chrysler's storied history and saying that the company helped make the 20th Century an American Century, he also chastised the numerous poor decisions made by all parties involved. Chrysler has "for too long, moved too slowly, building less popular cars, that are less reliable and less fuel efficient," Obama said.

The President praised Chrysler management, the UAW and the company's major lender JP Morgan for their "unprecedented sacrifices," and blasted the small group of holdout hedge funds that have refused to budge and accept the Federal government's offer. That offer would see the U.S. government pay out lenders $2 billion in cash for $6.8 billion in debt.

The official Chapter 11 paperwork is expected to be filed as early as today and in the restructuring process the Federal government will provide additional loans to Chrysler. Those loans are not open-ended, however, and will have to be repaid in full before Fiat can take a majority stake in the U.S. automaker.

In the mean time Chrysler operations are expected to continue as normal with one major change. The finance arm of General Motors, GMAC, will finance car loads at the dealership level.

president's message about Chrysler

Yeh right. From the lips of someone with vast (any?) business experience BHO criticizes Chrysler for building vehicles no one wants! The same government that gave us Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac now will control Chrysler, and an auto industry that, before government takeover, built exactly what the folks wanted. It just wasn't what the now powerful progressives want us to have! Wake up America.

What I am suspicious of is, can the Gov. now dictate what cars Chrysler can build? Do you expect, as I do, to see them order our horrible "gas guzzlers" to be terminated?

Chrysler was already bailed out once by the gov in the early 1980's. I guess that lesson didn't sink in too well, for anybody.

Completely untrue on all levels.

The government merely guaranteed the 1979 loans, which were private.

What was the lesson learned exactly? That Chrysler could retool with new successful products and replay the loans years ahead of schedule?

We would be very lucky to have that history repeat itself.

What a rude and baseless post.

The President needs not be an expert on all topics, what is the entire reason there is a cabinet and there are advisors.

I will admit though that this automotive task force was poorly assembled. Not a single one of them owns an American car.

I'd also like to remind you that "BHO" owned and drove a Chrysler 300C before taking office.

Those successful products are long gone and forgotten, and Chrysler again lost its way. And yes we would be very lucky to have another Iacocca pushing a hot new product, what ever that ends up being. I don't think we'll see that combination again, but I'm hopeful that they can become and *STAY* competitive, instead to slacking off and letting Toyota eat their lunch time and time again.

Well SirHarper, where in any business model does it show that 55% of the workers (UAW) should control the company? The inmates run the assylum? Rude and baseless? You are the problem in America, not the solution! And it's not just BHO's ill-advised auto industry experts. That is but a small portion of what is happening with your messiah. Do you want socialism and total government control?

The UAW might start out with 55% but they probably won't be able to keep it due to their pension and health care obligations, plus they won't have any controlling representation on the board.

Hi Guys!!

I hope you're OK.

I'm often confused - which makes life for me both frustrating AND interesting! lol

QUESTION:

Is it - or is it not - misleading to say that Chrysler is 'officially bankrupt' or 'has gone bankrupt', etc. I've seen those headlines just about everywhere now. [As most of us have - I'm sure] But truth be told - isn't the whole purpose for there being a 'chapter 11' to KEEP a company from GOING bankrupt? And if that's true - than fact of the matter is - Chrysler is NOT bankrupt.

Am I right or am I right?! lol

Craig!!
