Here's a post by Gary Kouba (turbomangt) and his thoughts on buffers. He's probably the most knowledgable one here for these questions, being in the business and all.

griot's garage has a great PDF download on detailing. it's about 70 pages if you decide to print it out.

Griot's Garage 1-800-345-5789 - Detailer's Manual

i have a craftsman orbital buffer, but if i were to buy a new one, it would be from griots.

You want a dual-action orbital buffer, not a high-speed buffer (unless you REALLY know what you're doing). Dewalt or Porter-Cable are the recommended brands by Gary Kouba.

I just purchased a porter cable orbital buffer w/some LC CCS pads. This is one of the most highly rated orbitals. I found on web for $105...pads and backing were additional $70.

I noticed some minor scratches probably from me not using proper towel on my hood and by drivers side door handle that is driving me crazy. They are barely visible but I notice them.

I will take some before and afte pics to see if this does the trick.

I'm a professional detailer, so my word is pretty good heh.

If your going to pick up a buffer, definitely pick up a random orbital buffer. The thing with high speed buffers is that you HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING WITH THEM in order to get good results, and often, detailers have to go back over their work with a random orbital to get out imperfections that the high speed buffer put in, plus you can EASILY burn your paint with the high speed buffer. The buffer I use is the Porter Cable 7424 and HIGHLY recommend it. Also, pick up several pads of various hardness pads, along with nice products. I recommend Menzerna polishes, Klasse polishes, and some Wolfgang polishes.

Good luck!

From what I can tell, the Porter Cable and the Griots are the same polisher with a different handle. I have no personal experience, but have been looking at them recently myself. Apparently, it's a good idea to get the hook and loop pad backing to make changeover easier. Amazon.com is running a special on them:
Amazon.com: Porter-Cable 7424 3.7 Amp 6-Inch Variable-Speed Random-Orbit Polisher: Home Improvement
Griots kit comes with a detailing video.
