Clay Bar questions

Do I need to strip the wax off my car before I clay bar it?

Is there any place on the car that it's not supposed to be used (like near taillights)? Thanks.

WELCOME from our West Virginia LXs in the Mid-Ohio River Valley. Please consider making an introductory thread in the New Members section so that more people will recognize that "you've arrived."

For best results, yes, you want to remove the existing wax before you clay bar. You can use the clay bar on plastic and glass. I haven't used it on chrome clad pieces, but it might even prove useful there, but don't take my word on that!

Thanks. I assume washing with dish soap would be the most efficient way to do that?

Dish soap is very harsh and will remove the wax. Just be sure to wash the car in the shade, in small sections and rinse thoroughly after each section to prevent soap residue to dry on the paint... that would be bad.

dish soap can be used, and like the above states: it's very harsh. the problem that many detailers are split when it comes to dish soap is although it strips off wax easily, it might not be good for plastic trim, or rubber (like weather stripping) because it is a harsher cleaner.
While you can strip the wax off first, you don't have to. the thing is, prior to claying, you'll need the car to be clean (so the clay picks up actual contamination, not dirt and grime that'd come off anyways), so u might as well wash with dish soap, clay, rinse back down, then use a wax/sealant.
use plenty of lubrication, and the clay can be used on all exterior surfaces if used correctly (lubrication, surface isn't hot, little to no pressure).
oh, and don't forget to post up pic's for everyone to enjoy once your done making your baby smooootth

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this. I don't think the previous owner really waxed it at all and it feels rough all over the trunk and rear bumper. Probably won't get around to it until next weekend (I'm off ) but I'll be sure to get some pics up. Now I think I'll take Goofy's advice and head over to the new members section...
