Found this post that might be of interest...

Pits are caused by small debris (pebbles, sand, and such striking the glass but not breaking it. Most all cars have some and up north where they put salt and sand on roads they are worse. They can be repaired by a good windshield repair place. The scratches can be polished out with the correct equipment, we do it all the time and also remove acid rain and water spots. The scratch removal is $75.00 per hour and it DOES NOT distort the glass. A special glass polish is used and a special high speed polisher. We have to also cool the glass during the process with water. Heat, polish, and water remove the scratches. If you can find someone in your area with some Glas Weld equipment it is your best shot.
Ask an auto glass business in your area if they have any experience doing this.

Just wondering how a 2009 model could already have a windshield in such poor condition?

I don't know about Canada, but in the States, many insurance companies will automatically replace windshields in such a condition as described. Some owners have small deductibles for glass and othes have insurance companies that don't charge deductibles.

In the article Rambit referred to, my OEM replacement would be less than the $75.00.

Regardless, I hope you find what you are searching for.

My windshield got pitted making the trip to CA, so I can understand how fast it can happen even with a new car.

True. And you know what? It's going to get pitted again in the Spring so plan on getting a new windshield after you return home.

I seem to recollect that one or an Auto Glass R&R business can buff out pits and other imperfections; as long as it's not too deep or bad !! I've seen a TV commercial of late by a company called Safelite. I'm not sure if those are in Canada ,but they show a device applying a clear resin : The Windshield Repair Process.. Safelite AutoGlass - Windshield Repair Guide

The resin that fills and seals the damaged area is applied using an injector on the exclusive Glass Medic repair system. There's a little 7 step pictorial. Also, A quality windshield repair will restore the structural integrity of the windshield, help prevent the damage from spreading, and make the blemish much less noticeable, without removing and replacing the glass. Here's more info that may be of some help :
Effects of Stress on Windshield Chips and Cracks

As the auto glass experts, it is our job to conduct and share industry-leading research to understand how glass damage could impact you. In a recent windshield damage study, we learned that stressors like extreme temperatures, driving and fatigue will cause existing windshield chips and cracks to spread quickly.
Cold weather stress

In cold weather conditions, windshields will develop a more concave shape. As a result, windshield chips and dings are more likely to spread in a horizontal fashion. According to a study conducted by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA), chips were likely to spread more than 80 percent of the time at temperatures of 14 degrees (-10° C). Those tested at 32 degrees were nearly 60 percent likely to crack.
Warm weather stress

Warm weather conditions cause windshields chips to spread more vertically. The same study conducted by MIRA suggested that the heat itself distorts the shape of the windshield glass, which can lead to cracking by itself. However, it was also found that the cooling effect of the air conditioning unit is likely to set off a crack.
Driving and fatigue stress
Driving over a speed bump, pothole or other uneven terrain can cause a chip to crack. The force radiates through the car and puts additional pressure on the edges of the chip, which can quickly lead to a crack.
Although it is not possible to suggest how long it will take for a chip to spread, the study suggests that stressors like weather changes and simple driving will eventually cause or lengthen a windshield crack.
Getting a windshield repair early can stop the damage from spreading and prevent the need for a windshield replacement !!! Hey, I just found a product that might be just what you're looking for [says it's $25.00 for a tiny 1OZ. bottle] ,here's their website , Poly-Lite Windshield Repair ProductsProduct Name: Poly Pit Filler
Description: High Viscosity (300 cps). Fills pits with a glass-like hardness.
Unit: 1oz Bottle
Code: PL106
Price:25.00

Y-ahh, y-ahhh; at that price,it might go further if it's put in the micro for 30 sec...spread it out and if there's too many pits to fill, it would be cheaper to R&R'it !! Now , I am recollecting,,I did have a shop buff out a windshield [ on one of my '70 Challengers] and it did look pretty good!

You didn't get a new windshield for it?

Most other museums would have...
