Any tips for storing over winter?

I'm seriously thinking of parking the SRT8 up when the tax runs out at the end of December, until the spring. The car will stay outside on the drive - but I wondered if there were any storage tips to minimise problems when it goes back on the road.

Thanks in advance

Bob

For the bodywork, I would give the beaut a proper wash and clay bar, polish and seal with carnauba wax to prevent rusting. Could get a car cover if you intend to keep it outdoors e.g. to avoid bird dropping which left for longer periods could potentially damage paintwork.

For the engine, change oil & filter and renew anti freeze in case if it snows this winter. Its easy and cheap to do yourself and don't forget to add additive to the windscreen washer

Other areas of concern is the battery, check level and top up if necessary. You may want to disconnect the battery, it will eventually go flat but remember if you decide to disconnect you won't have an alarm to protect it from intrusion.

Braking system is another area of concern. You may want to spray brake cleaner to the front & back brake discs and callipers to remove brake dirt to minimise rusting and possible seizure. Foot brake is another concern too.

Perhaps if you could give the beaut a start once in a while perhaps every fortnightly basis? for say at least 20 - 30 minutes. Keeping the engine running once in a while will help charge battery too, you could even park your car by facing it in the other direction if you like.

Check tyre pressure too, if you have slow puncture tend to it as soon as

^^^ X2 ^^^ plus try placing a small open bag of charcoal brickets on passenger floorboard. This will keep moisture and foul orders at bay.

If you can get and leave a 240V supply via an extension lead and trap the 240V socket under the bonnet or in the boot I would definitely buy a "Battery Condition Charger" and leave it looking after the battery all winter.
It will keep your battery in perfect condition without overheating and only costs a very small amount in electricity. It will also keep all the electronics working in the car and prevent error codes on start up and keep the security system enabled.

Not a conventional trickle charger which will will overheat and damage the battery, it must be the type that you can keep connected permanently. Will probably set you back about £30 plus but it will save you a lot of hassle and keep the battery in perfect order for just a few pence a week.

Aldi & Lidl sell those trickle/conditioning chargers every so often. Bought one the other week for £14, keep a look out.

Thanks for the replies - all sensible stuff - will look out for a battery conditioner. I guess I will have to SORN it - not a problem though (although does that affect a personal registration?)

No Sorn does not affect a private registration number thats on a car. Look for a C-Tek charger (hundreds on fleabay), just make sure you get one that covers the AH of your cars battery. I use one to keep my caravan's battery in tip top condition.

Move it around a bit, too - avoids getting flat spots on the tyres.
