Aren't some of them black from new? I'm sure I've seen them advertised with activated charcoal in them.

BTW, I've used a DIY regassing kit. It worked for two days but then escaped out of a leak somewhere.

Yep buddy, your absolutely right. There are standard filters and also filters that come coated with charcoal, which appears greyish/black in colour. The charcoal helps to reduce any foul smell and possibly build up of bacteria too.

Charcoal filters are slightly expensive over standard filters, but I recently found Denso brand at Eurocarparts which had Charcoal coating. With the promo codes the price including free home delivery is around £13, which I think is a great deal

Eurocarpart frequently have theses promo codes but I think the offers are available to online shopping. They do have a 'Click & Collect' facility and the goods can be collected & paid at store

Sorry to hear about the DIY regassing. Dye needs to be added into the system to locate the leak. Leak could happen anywhere in the system but the condenser is usually the first stop and then the piping's. If the refrigerant escapes the dye will leak, it should be easy to see luminous colour
