OK, after a long search on Google regarding high beam and linking up with other sites and forums, I have found 2 possible upgrade solutions, which will increase high beam output.

Solution 1

This is the most cost effective upgrade. Replace high beam bulb 9005 (HB3), with uprated 100 watt bulbs.

I checked wiring and plugs and checked the fuse. The wiring is OK to take on the extra power and the original fuse rating for the high beams at 20A is OK. TBH, you can plug in 10A fuse and still get away without it blowing.

I found a link here although there may be other bargains. Its a pair of 9005, plus comes with 2x sidelights. Its apparently coated which is to help filter some of the yellow but I'm sure the coating will eventually fade off.

Solution 2

This is expensive! but it will get the closest desired effect for a HID solution for your high beams, little or no warm up time its fast enough for a flash.

Parts required, a pair of OEM replacement D4S ballast. Denso has been recommended a few times on various forums and I know of this brand can be found on our cars e.g. alternator and the front wind shield wipers motor. It has a very shortest warm up time, ideal for flash.

Also a pair of AMP D4S harness and a pair of HID 9005 bulb is needed to complete the project. The ballast is the most expensive part, which makes it an expensive mod!!!

For now, I've gone with the Solution 1, so lets see how that goes

But anyone here for Solution 2 I have added a video here of D4S Denso ballast, the igniter is build in and the rest is plug and play.

I think like with many generic ballasts, risks of personal injury is very low as long as care is taken during installation process, like disconnecting the battery. Some basic practical & electrical knowledge helps

As for the technical side, the ballast will need to be mounted to the vehicle and 2 wires for + (ive) & - (ive) will need to be spliced to vehicle loom. The high beam are fused at 20amps, which is the correct rating for HID's, same like factory d1s ballast, which is mounted on the underside of the headlight housing.

For now I've gone with a bulb upgrade to 100 watts, its a lot cheaper and I think should give a higher output than stock. Lets see how it goes, watch this space

I have a cheap set of HID main beams at 4300K (35W....goodness knows what 55W are like...melt the road, probably!). They take a few seconds to get to full strength when newly switched on, and they can cool-off to that position after about 3 minutes of having them off (when using dipped only). Its not too much of a problem though, as the dipped beam stays on to provide some light until theyre warm. Having said that, when they do get to full strength its like daylight for 150 yards. May sure you get canbus versions....I swapped a non-canbus ballast in & it switched off after 3 secondS

This is the make I went for...they keep reasonably priced spares HB3 9005 CANBUS SOLVED 35w HID CONVERSION KIT 4300k UK | eBay . You can do this a lot cheaper using a cheap kit & a canbus wiring harness....I've only used a cheap non canbus kit in the reversing lights (theyre durable kits), so I cant say how good the canbus wires are.

just one thing....make sure you get an air gap between any wires/parts. I just pushed my first harness in any old way, so wires touched the back of the bulb....and I melted the bulb's backside. Since then, no issues (ie a period of 18 months or more)

looking for a pair of 5W5's today and saw the above are standard stock at Halfrauds...£16.99 each.

i did wonder at the time if they would be suitable main beam replacements

Bite the bullet and get a HID kit for about £40.....canbus friendly
