Exhaust mount on 300CRD Estate

Hi,

Looked under the rear of the car and spotted this rubber mount on the RH exhaust. Does anyone know what it should be connected to?

I can't see anything obvious or even signs that something has dropped off! Any guidance appreciated.

Cheers

Ben

It doesn't look like the mounts I have seen. That looks like a vibration damper (that doesn't connect to anything) to me.

I think I've seen this on some other cars and if memory serves correctly, it is a dampener. Not sure if it is for vibration or noise cancellation.

Think you will find its supposed to stop the exhaust resonating at a certain frequency and causing annoying noises (probably a droning noise).

Every piece of equipment or plant has a resonant frequency that will create noise and in this case the big wad of rubber changes the resonant frequency of the system so its outside the audible range.

You are all right, except for when we've had a car in for replacement exhaust or the rubber has fell off there is no difference in resonation in the car......lol

I asked the same question 6 yrs ago, when my car was fairly new. The consensus then was that it was an anti-vibration damper. I suspect the offending vibration only occurs within a specific RPM range. Some funny comments were made about the splodge of pink paint.

A bit like the swirl motor then......it's there but it doesnt really affect emissions/performance if it stops working.
